Dining Commons

Anticipated start :

March 2008

Anticipated completion:

July 2009

Architect:

Hanbury Evans Wright Viattas

Contractor:

Rentenbach

Project cost:

$9.1 million, University revenue bonds

The College's present dining hall seats 178 people — adequate for the 350 students who lived on campus 10 years ago but hardly equal to present needs. With 700 students living and dining on campus today — as well as faculty, staff and commuter students who choose to eat there — the current facility is far beyond capacity.

Therefore, the College plans to build a new dining commons. This project will provide a new, two-level dining facility. The lower level will provide a coffee shop and an entertainment space, along with primary kitchen facilities. The upper level will house the servery, the main dining facility and a private dining space. The facility will be able to handle future campus growth through a pre-developed area of expansion. This project will be located in what is now the parking area adjacent to the future Center for the Arts.

October 2008 Status: The sanitary sewer, primary power and telecom duct banks are in progress, within five feet of the building edge. The Dining Hall cast-in-place concrete walls are complete. Masonry and structural steel are in progress.

August 2008 Status: Foundation work has begun and mechanical systems are being re-priced.

March 2008 Status: The site fence and erosion control fencing was installed.

February 2008 Status: Working with the Department of Conservation and Recreation to secure a soil and water erosion permit.

January 2008 Status: We have received the Army Corp of Engineers permit and are awaiting the Department of Conservation and Recreation’s soil and water erosion permit.

November 2007 Status: Preliminary site work plans are being finalized so that work can begin in the first of the year.

October 2007 Status: The Board of Visitors approved the schematic drawings.

September 2007 Status: Value Management has been completed.

August 2007 Status: Value Management has occurred, and we are awaiting the final reconciliations of the report.

July 2007 Status: Design and pricing work continues on this project.  Value Management will take place Aug. 14-15.

June 2007 Status: Design and pricing continues on this project.

May 2007 Status: Rentenbach of Knoxville, Tenn., has been selected as the Construction Manger at Risk for this project. At this time they are working with U.Va. Facilities Planning and Construction, UVa-Wise and Hanbury Evans Wright Vlattas to obtain an accurate estimate of the construction cost based on the design.

April 2007 Status: This project is proceeding with Schematic Design. Value engineering is currently being scheduled for early June. Interviews for Construction Management at Risk will take place on May 3. This project is being done in conjunction with Residence Hall 3 to minimize congestion in the work zone.
