This project will transform the main entrance of the campus into a boulevard, providing a new entry feature and developing a bluestone drop-off point at the pedestrian entry near the Slemp Student Center. Combined with this will be a pedestrian walkway to replace the existing “dead-end” road between the Chapel and Crockett Hall and featuring a sunken garden near Crockett Hall. Nearby parking spaces also will be added.
March 2008 Status: A portion of the precast stone wall be replaced with Gladeville Sandstone. The granite curbing and paving are complete. One half of the sunken garden form work is complete. The McCrary Hall link to the duct bank was installed and the porch concrete was placed.
February 2008 Status: The pre-cast mock up for the final portion of the entrance wall was approved. The granite curbing installation has begun. Work continues on the duct bank.
January 2008 Status: Utility work continues. Excavation, steel reinforcement and conduit for the underground electrical duct bank are underway. Early preparation for the granite curb installation in the parking lot has begun.
November 2007 Status: Sidewalk work continues. Final sub grade work for the parking area is complete. The foundation for the sunken garden walls is complete. Stone masonry on the entrance wall is ongoing. The vault for the hydrant connection is underway.
October 2007 Status: Wall foundation work is nearly complete with the rock structure underway. The fire hydrant vault has been installed, and sidewalk work continues. The foundation for the walls surrounding the sunken garden near Crockett are underway. Design work is being done for a new IT duct bank between Crockett and Smiddy.
September 2007 Status: Roadway lighting in front of Smiddy Hall has been installed and tested. The foundation has been completed for the new entrance wall. The sidewalk connecting to Bowers-Sturgill Hall has been framed. Site utility work continues. Additional rock outcrops are being removed.
August 2007 Status: Sidewalks have been completed. Foundations were laid for the eastern section of the new entry wall. The fire hydrant was relocated. Other site utility work was completed.
July 2007 Status: The concrete curbing on the entrance crossroad has been completed. The boulevard entrance will receive granite curbing on the center island, which we anticipate will be installed during fall break. The base coarse of asphalt has been installed on the boulevard and crossroad. Drivers are strongly encouraged to use extreme caution on this portion of road as it is not at final grade with connecting pavement on existing roadways and signage directing traffic is not yet in place.
June 2007 Status: Rough grading continues on the parking area and new road surface areas. The contractor intends for the new entrance to open prior to the start of the fall semester, using the subsurface material. (Note that the entrance is anticipated to open in August 2007, but the entire entrance project still has an anticipated completion date of July 2008.) Demolition of existing road and parking areas has been completed.
May 2007 Status:
Burwil Construction of Bristol, Tenn., was awarded the contract. They have moved their construction trailer onto the site and are scheduled to begin site work during the week of June 11.
April 2007 Status: The project drawings have gone through the Assistant State Building Official (ASBO). On Thursday, April 26, we will be interviewing and selecting the Contract Manager at Risk who will perform the construction. The Contract Manager at Risk for this project will be the same for Crockett Hall in order to coordinate construction activities in the tight area.
Tree Relocation, May 2007 Status: The tree relocation project is complete.
Tree Relocation, April 2007 Status: Davey Tree began their tree relocation preparation work the third week of April. This project, which is a component of the Campus Entrance, Crockett Hall renovation and Center for the Arts projects, will relocate five oak trees and one maple tree. They are encountering even more rock then the test borings indicated. Given the amount of rock, they will not be able to use the large tree spade to relocate the trees.
