Science Building

Launched:

January 2008

Anticipated completion:

April 2009

Architect:

VMDO

Contractor:

Quesenberry's Inc.

Project cost:

$13.435 million, state general funds

Originally constructed in 1965, the Science Building recently received an additional wing. The pre-existing part of the facility will now receive a renovation to bring the entire building up to date.

This project will provide laboratory spaces for courses in geology, software engineering and physics. The vivarium — which allows College students and faculty to raise animals in a setting that simulates their natural environment — will be completed, and the observation dome will be relocated. The internal infrastructure of the building will be updated, the HVAC systems will be upgraded and fire suppression will be added.

October 2008 Status: Roof work is complete. First and second floor conduit is being installed. The observatory road has been constructed. CMU work in the basement is underway. The duct bank to the greenhouse has been completed. Work has started on the underground electrical and plumbing to the greenhouse.

August 2008 Status: The lecture hall has received authorization for use for the fall semester. This work included new lighting, new ceiling, HVAC and fire suppression. Finish grade is in place for the greenhouse and materials have arrived for the roof decking. The underground electrical duct bank has been completed.

March 2008 Status: The framing of the galley wall in the lobby is underway. Installation of conduit and duct work is underway on the second floor. Plumbing rough-in is beginning.

February 2008 Status: Metal wall studs have begun in the building. Additional concrete foundation analysis was completed.

January 2008 Status: The notice to proceed with construction was given.

November 2007 Status: Interior demolition work is 75 percent complete.

October 2007 Status: Asbestos abatement has been completed. Demolition is underway on first and second floors.

September 2007 Status: The modular units for the geology and physics laboratory space have been installed. The lab equipment has been moved in to make them operational. Asbestos abatement is currently underway. Demolition is scheduled to begin within two weeks.

August 2007 Status: The installation of modular units for the geology and physics Laboratory space was delayed until Sept. 5. Upon arrival asbestos abatement will commence, with an anticipated completed by the end of September.

July 2007 Status: Demolition in the original portion of the Science Building is anticipated to begin in September, which will reroute both pedestrian and vehicular traffic near the site. The front entrance to the original portion of the Science Building will not be in use. The single inbound traffic lane leading to the Zehmer Hall and Science Building parking lot will be closed. During construction, traffic will be moved fully to the single outbound traffic lane leading from the Zehmer Hall and Science Building parking lot. Because inbound and outbound will share this single lane, drivers are strongly encouraged to use extreme caution.

June 2007 Status: Two temporary trailers have been ordered for use as physics and geology labs and are expected to arrive in late July or early August. These will be placed in the old tennis courts adjacent to the commuter parking lot. This was a critical component in allowing construction to possibly begin by October 2007.

May 2007 Status: Scheduling and design continues to take place.  Scheduling issues include the timing of the start of demolition and potential lead items for construction, in order to continue to move the project forward.

April 2007 Status: This month the project went through Value Engineering to determine areas of potential savings in the planning documents. Analysis continued on the project’s ability to meet LEED Certification (certification of an environmental sustainability).
