Smiddy Hall - May 2007

Anticipated start :

Fall 2008

Anticipated completion:

To be determined

Architect: Train & Partners

Contractor:

Rentenbach Incorporated

Project cost:

$13.546 million, state general funds

Completed in 1972 and named for Chancellor Emeritus Joe Smiddy, Smiddy Hall will soon undergo a major physical transformation. The Smiddy Hall renovation will bring the systems in the building up to date, address accessibility issues and result in the construction of new classrooms and faculty offices. The exterior will be addressed to provide a focal point to the entrance of the campus.

Before the Smiddy Hall renovation may begin, however, a new IT facility must be completed for the College's information technology offices (currently housed in Smiddy Hall). The IT facility will be built as an addition to Smiddy Hall and will house the College's IT offices, the server room and equipment repair.

October 2008 Status: Re-pricing of IT infrastructure was completed. Pre-construction conference was completed.

August 2008 Status: Interior color and material selections are being confirmed. Anticipated site work for the IT Facility will begin in October. The final round of Engineering Value Management has been completed.

March 2008 Status: Coordination meetings are being scheduled.

February 2008 Status: Test pits were dug to confirm the test borings for specific rock location within the proposed basement area.

January 2008 Status: The Value Management Process has been completed and based on the findings, we are currently in preliminary design.

November 2007 Status: The firm of Train & Partners of Charlottesville was retained to provide architectural design work for the Smiddy/IT Project. The project is now proceeding with the IT facility being added onto Smiddy Hall as a wing on the east end of the building. Value Management has been scheduled. Preliminary floor plans and site elevations have been developed.

October 2007 Status: The architectural firm is being changed and negotiations are underway. This will result in a slight delay in the project.

September 2007 Status: Due to site constraints and the financial implications associated with the site, examination of the feasibility of adding a wing to Smiddy Hall to house the IT Facility is now being reviewed.

August 2007 Status:  Rentenbach Incorporated was selected as the Construction Management firm. Value Management for the IT Facility will be discussed Sept. 13.

July 2007 Status:  Design work continues for the IT Facility. Construction Management interviews for both projects will occur Aug. 23.

IT Facility Construction, June 2007 Status: The basic floor plan and sizing for the IT Facility has been completed. The final location based on the Master Plan has also been determined, and the IT Facility will not interfere with existing facilities and be in a location which will enable the long-term relocation of the main roadway. Design work is now underway using the floor plan and sizing.

Smiddy Hall Renovation, June 2007 Status:
To facilitate and continue the process, the architectural firm and College academic leadership met to discuss office and classroom needs for Smiddy Hall.

May 2007 Status: Work continues on the project to find an effective design.

April 2007 Status: The firm of Calloway Johnson Moore West was selected as the architectural firm. Room programming began on the IT facility.
