Professional
Activities:
Dr. Johnson has participated in education programs sponsored by the National Science Foundation. He has also participated in international working groups dedicated to understanding the geology of central Ireland. Dr. Johnson works with the Appalachian Math and Science Partnership, directing earth science institutes for elementary and secondary teachers. Dr. Johnson is a member of the National Association of Geoscience Teachers and the Geological Society of America.

Research
Interests:
Dr. Johnson is interested in metal movement in natural waters. He currently is investigating trace metal transport by acid mine drainage in wetlands treatment systems. In addition, Dr. Johnson has studied fluid inclusion and isotope geochemistry to elucidate the origin of world-class Zn-Pb deposits in Missouri and Ireland and continues that work on smaller deposits in southwest Virginia and northeast Tennessee. In addition to his interests in geochemistry, Dr. J uses applied geology to characterize archeological and historical sites, primarily in southwest Virginia.
