Endowed Scholarship Funds established in 2006-2007


The B. F. Athletic Scholarship Fund was established by an anonymous donor in 2006.  The Fund shall be used to provide scholarships to two student-athletes annually at The University of Virginia’s College at Wise.  Students must demonstrate good citizenship and maintain a 2.5 grade point average.  Preference will be given to students from Southwest Virginia, Eastern Kentucky, and Northeast Tennessee participating in the intercollegiate football program.     

The B. F. Needy Scholarship Endowment Fund was established by an anonymous donor in 2006.  The Fund shall be used to provide scholarships to students at The University of Virginia’s College at Wise on the basis of financial need and merit.  Preference will be given to students from Southwest Virginia, Eastern Kentucky, Southern West Virginia, and East Tennessee.  

The Joshua Bentley Memorial Football Scholarship Fund was established in 2006 in honor and memory of Joshua Bentley, a UVa-Wise student and athlete.  The scholarships will be awarded based on the following guidelines:  students must demonstrate excellence in personal integrity, citizenship, academics, and athletics; financial need; students who exhibit reasonable academic scholarship and excellent evidence of hard work and self-help; scholarships are not renewable, and preference will be given to a lineman from Southwest Virginia or Northeast Tennessee.  Scholarships shall be awarded by the UVa-Wise Assistant Vice Chancellor for Athletic Development, Athletics Director, and Financial Aid Director.

The Clyde Patton and Margie Read Bishop Memorial Scholarship Fund was established by the family and friends of Clyde Patton Bishop and Margie Read Bishop in 2006.  Scholarships will be awarded to entering freshman with a minimum GPA of 3.4 (out of 4.0) and a combined SAT of 1200, and worthy and deserving second, third, and fourth year students who meet the eligibility requirements at The University of Virginia’s College at Wise.  The scholarship gives preference to students from Southwest Virginia in good academic standing.

The John I. Burton Class of 1956 Scholarship Fund was established in 2006 by the John I. Burton Class of 1956.  The scholarship shall be used to provide scholarships to seniors from John I. Burton High School entering The University of Virginia’s College at Wise.  Awards will be made on the basis of need to students who academically rank in the top 25% of their graduating class.  Preference shall be given to students with high moral character.  In order to promote some sense of philanthropy to the school, seven years after graduation or sooner these scholarship recipients are encouraged to make a yearly, voluntary, (tax deductible at this time), contribution to the scholarship fund. 

The Sam Gilbert Foreign Study Fund was established by Carol Sue Gilbert in 2006, in loving memory of her husband, Sam Gilbert.  The fund shall be used to provide funds to enable full-time students at The University of Virginia’s College at Wise to travel to a foreign country and engage in the study of that country’s culture, language, and customs.  Preference shall be given to students studying in a formal program with appropriate collegiate-level instruction.

The Kay Hawkins and Dorothy Mullins Scholarship Fund was established by N. Carroll Mullins in 2006 in honor and memory of Kay Hawkins and Dorothy Mullins.  Scholarships will be awarded to worthy and deserving students who meet the eligibility criteria at The University of Virginia’s College at Wise.  Preference shall be given to Wise County residents in good academic standing who major in nursing or another health-related field.

The Valerie and Steve Lawson Scholarship Fund was established in 2006 by Valerie and Steve Lawson, graduates of the College.  The fund shall be used to provide scholarships for first generation college students majoring in business and/or mathematics who have a minimum grade point average of 2.5.  Priority shall be given to students with financial need.  Scholarships may be renewable. 

The Lee & Phipps Scholarship Fund   was established in 2006 by Paul L. Phipps and Lewey K. Lee of the Lee & Phipps, PC law firm.  The fund shall be used to provide scholarships to needy and worthy students at The University of Virginia’s College at Wise.  Preference will be given to students from Southwest Virginia.

The Lewey K. and Brenda B. Lee Scholarship Fund  was established in 2007 by Lewey K. and Brenda B. Lee, graduates of the College.  The fund shall be used to provide scholarship support for needy and worthy student athletes. 

The Becky Seay Matney Scholarship Fund was established in 2006 for the purpose of providing scholarships to needy and worthy student-athletes, male or female.  Preference will be given first to student-athletes from Big Stone Gap, Virginia, followed by student-athletes from Wise County and the City of Norton, Virginia.  Athletes will be expected to perform at least ten (10) hours of community service each semester.  The Matney Scholar will be expected to self-report their community service to the Scholarship and Financial Aid Committee on or before June 30 for the previous year.  Scholarships will be awarded by the UVa-Wise Scholarship and Financial Aid Committee upon the recommendation of the athletic director.  First-time students who meet regular admission requirements will be eligible.  Upperclass students must maintain an overall cumulative GPA of 2.5 to be eligible, and student-athletes may hold a Matney Scholarship for up to four academic years.  

The John Matney Scholarship Fund was established in 2006 for the purpose of providing scholarships to needy and worthy student-athletes, male or female.  Preference will be given first to student-athletes from Buchanan County, Virginia, followed by student-athletes from Dickenson County, Virginia.  Athletes will be expected to perform at least ten (10) hours of community service each semester.  The Matney Scholar will be expected to self-report their community service to the Scholarship and Financial Aid Committee on or before June 30 for the previous year.  Scholarships will be awarded by the UVa-Wise Scholarship and Financial Aid Committee upon the recommendation of the athletic director.  First-time students who meet regular admission requirements will be eligible.  Upperclass students must maintain an overall cumulative GPA of 2.5 to be eligible, and student-athletes may hold a Matney Scholarship for up to four academic years.  

The Freddie E. and Karen S. Mullins Scholarship Fund was established by alumni Freddie E. and Karen S. Mullins in 2006.  The fund shall be used to provide scholarships to worthy and deserving students at The University of Virginia’s College at Wise.  Scholarship awards shall be made to students from Dickenson County and based on merit.

The Poor Farm Society Scholarship Fund was established by the Poor Farm Society in 2007.  The Fund shall provide two scholarships to students at the University of Virginia’s College at Wise.  The specific scholarships are:

(1) Buck Henson Scholarship in memory and honor of Edward L. “Buck” Henson, Jr., Founder of the Poor Farm Society.  (2) Poor Farm Retirees Scholarship in honor of retired faculty and staff.  Financial need may be considered in the awarding of scholarships and scholarship awards may be renewable. 

The John A. Shafer Scholarship Fund was established by John A. Shafer, a 1986 alumnus of the College.  The fund shall be used to provide scholarships to students who demonstrate merit and financial need.  Scholarships will be awarded by the University of Virginia’s College at Wise Scholarship Committee to students studying Political Science or Business Ethics. 

The Thomas Family Scholarship Fund was established by Mike and Deborah H. Thomas in 2007.  This fund shall provide scholarships for needy and worthy students at The University of Virginia’s College at Wise.

The Coach Tom Turner Scholarship Fund was established in 2006 in honor and memory of Coach Tom Turner.  The Fund shall be used to provide scholarships for student-athletes from Southwest Virginia.  Scholarships shall be available for a male or female athlete participating in any intercollegiate sport who remains in good academic standing.  Preference will be given to a student-athlete who is a graduate of Appalachia High School and/or a resident of Appalachia, Virginia.  Scholarships may be renewed.

The Colonel Ambrose White & Thelma M. White, TMCK Corporate Scholarship Fund was established in 2007 by Thelma M. White, President and CEO of TMCK.  The fund shall be used for scholarships for students who display evidence of hard work and self help.  Preference shall be given to students from Russell County and the Town of Wise.
