Phone: 276-679-5880 Bryan Arnette, M.D. is a board certified family physician who works with the Wise Medical Group of Health Care Associates in Norton, Virginia. The Wise Medical Group is a multi-specialty practice that also includes Marie Stemple, M.D. (Internal Medicine), Timothy McBride, M.D. (Pediatrics), Galileo Molina, M.D., (General Practice), and Pediatric Nurse Practitioner Cindy Sexton. Born in Big Stone Gap, Virginia on October 1, 1975, Dr. Arnette grew up in nearby Exeter, a small town established in the early years of the twentieth century around an industrial site in the heart of Virginia’s coal country. He is married to Lori Arnette, a professional teacher with training in Elementary and Physical Education. The Arnette family includes a son named Aidan, born in 2003. They reside in Gate City, Virginia. Dr. Arnette graduated in 1998 with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Biology from Clinch Valley College of the University of Virginia, now called The University of Virginia’s College at Wise. He moved to Charlottesville in 1998 and took a Medical Doctorate from the University of Virginia School of Medicine in 2002. He completed a three year residency at Spartanburg Regional Medical Center Family Medicine Program in Spartanburg, South Carolina in 2005. The Spartanburg residency is affiliated with the University of South Carolina and the Medical University of South Carolina. Upon completing his residency training, Dr. Arnette joined the Wise Medical Group in Norton, Virginia. The Wise Medical Group is located in Medical Arts Building #3 on the campus of Mountain View Regional Medical Center in Norton. Dr. Arnette sees between 25 and 30 patients a day in the office, where he works from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. He admits patients to Mountain View and calls on his own patients when he has admissions. Dr. Arnette shares weekend and after-hours call with three other physicians on staff at the hospital. Each clinician in the Wise Medical Group has three exam rooms for his/her exclusive use and Dr. Arnette also has a procedure room. He does minor skin surgeries, joint injections, and nasal laryngoscopies in the office; he does esophagogastroduodenoscopies and colonoscopies at Mountain View Regional. Patients who need medical lab work, x-rays, and other diagnostic studies are referred to the hospital, which is just down the road from the medical office. The Wise Medical Group accepts patients of all ages without regard to insurance status. Dr. Arnette estimates that 10% of his patients are children, 60% are adults, and 30% are older adults. The practice does not utilize electronic medical records but has Internet connections on the premises. Although he enjoys the full spectrum of Family Medicine, Dr. Arnette is especially interested in gastrointestinal endoscopy. He schedules one half day each week for procedures at the hospital. Many veterans of the armed forces are patients of the Wise Medical Group and Dr. Arnette has encountered some unusual disease states among his patient population. Residents who come for rotations with Dr. Arnette may see some patients with rather exotic illnesses. When he isn’t practicing medicine, Dr. Arnette spends time with his family. He also enjoys outdoor activities, mainly hunting, fishing, swimming, and playing golf. He is a football fan at both the college and professional levels and loves to watch the UVA-Wise Cavaliers in action. Mountain View Regional Medical Center is a 133 bed acute care hospital owned by Health Management Associates, a company that concentrates on the operation of rural facilities. Hospital services include emergency care, critical care, medical, surgical, pediatric and skilled/intermediate nursing care, radiology, medical laboratory, nutrition, pharmacy, and a range of cardiopulmonary and rehabilitative therapies. Mountain View also offers an in-hospital outpatient clinic, durable medical equipment, and home nursing services. Specialties on staff are Anesthesia, Cardiology, Dentistry, Emergency Medicine, Family Medicine, General Practice, Gastroenterology, Geriatrics, Internal Medicine, Nephrology, Neurology, Oncology, Ophthalmology, Otolaryngology, Pathology, Pediatrics, Podiatry, Pulmonary Medicine, Radiology/Nuclear Medicine, General Surgery, Orthopedic Surgery, and Urology. Mountain View Regional is one of two hospitals in the small city of Norton, Virginia, the other being Norton Community Hospital. The Southwest Virginia Regional Cancer Center is also located in Norton. Residents who train with Dr. Arnette may choose to stay in a two bedroom furnished house near the Town of Wise or in one of the local motels in Norton/Wise -- Best Western, Holiday Inn, Comfort Inn, Country Hearth, or Super 8. Norton lies in a long narrow valley overshadowed by the northern face of spectacular Stone Mountain. The city boundaries extend to those of the neighboring Town of Wise. The two municipalities share a population of around 12,000. The population of Wise County is 39,573. The economy is diverse, a change from its one-time dependence on coal mining and other extractive industries. Major sectors of the economy include: educational, health and social services (24%), retail and wholesale trade (17%), agriculture, forestry, hunting, fishing, and mining (11%), construction (7%), arts, entertainment, recreation, accommodation and food services (7%), public administration (7%), manufacturing (6%), and professional, scientific, management, and administrative services (5%). Two four-lane highways intersect in Norton (U.S. 23 and U.S. 58 Alternate) and offer easy access for travelers throughout Southwest Virginia and Southeast Kentucky. There are four shopping centers in the Norton/Wise area with any number of department stores, groceries, discount stores, and specialty boutiques. There is a two-screen cinema in one of the shopping centers. American, Chinese, Mexican, and Italian “sit-down” restaurants vie with fast food vendors for dining dollars. The Virginia/Kentucky “Opry” in downtown Norton showcases bluegrass, gospel, and country music acts on weekends and a Pro-Art Association based at the University of Virginia’s College at Wise offers a broad spectrum of cultural entertainments throughout the academic year. Norton has two parks with well-equipped playgrounds in the downtown area. On Stone Mountain, high above the city streets, are the Flag Rock and High Knob recreation areas with facilities for hiking, biking, swimming, picnicking, and fishing. From a fire tower on High Knob, visitors can enjoy an awesome 360-degree view of the surrounding countryside. Just on the other side of Stone Mountain are Bark Camp Lake and High Knob Lake, both created by dams built to store municipal water supplies and prevent flash floods.
