Roy Gomez is a board-certified pediatrician and fellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics. He is also a fellow of the American Academy of Family Physicians. Dr. Gomez practices at the Richlands Community Medical Center in Richlands, Virginia. He is married and has two grown children, a son and a daughter, both of who live in Chicago.

Dr. Gomez was born in Rengam, Malaysia and reared in Quilon, Kerala, India. He earned a BS degree from Fatima Matha College in Quilon in 1964. Dr. Gomez taught Zoology at Fatima Matha for a year before pursuing a medical doctorate between 1966 and 1972 at Trivandrum Medical College in Kerala, India. After receiving an M.D., Dr. Gomez spent two years at the Jawharlal Institute of Medical Science in Pondicherry, India, where he was senior resident in pediatrics from 1973 to 1974. He earned a D.C.H. degree from this institution in 1974. Dr. Gomez taught Internal Medicine at Kottayam Medical College in Karala, India from 1974 to 1976.

Dr. Gomez moved to the United States in 1976 and completed a pediatric residency at New York Medical College, New York, New York, in 1979. While in training, he worked part-time as an emergency physician at Christ Hospital in Jersey City, New Jersey. In 1979, Dr. Gomez moved to Richlands, Virginia and worked as Chief of Pediatrics for Mattie Williams Hospital until 1985. Since 1985, he has been in private practice in Cedar Bluff, just outside the town of Richlands.

Practice hours for Dr. Gomez are 8:00 a.m. ­ 5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday and 8:00 a.m. ­ 1:00 p.m. on Saturdays. Dr. Gomez sees about 25 patients a day. There are five exam rooms on the premises along with a medical lab of moderate complexity. A radiologist, Dr. Nuri Erylemaz, has x-ray facilities on site. Patients who need other services are referred to Clinch Valley Medical Center. Dr. Gomez's office has a phone line dedicated for Internet access and electronic communications.

By age, the patient population breaks down as follows: infants ­ 10%; children ­ 40%; adolescents ­ 10%; adults ­ 30%; and older adults ­ 10%. About 50% of the patients are covered by Medicaid or Medicare; 40% have commercial insurance, and 10% are uninsured.

Dr. Gomez takes emergency pediatric call at Clinch Valley Medical Center in Richlands, where he is called upon only occasionally. He is on the family practice call schedule once every 4-5 days for Tazewell Community Hospital in Tazewell, Virginia, where he receives an average of one call per day. He invites residents to participate in the call schedule as they wish.

Dr. Gomez maintains newborn, pediatric, and medicine admitting privileges at Tazewell Community Hospital and he has newborn and pediatric privileges at Clinch Valley Medicine Center. Clinch Valley Medical Center is about 5 miles from his office; Tazewell Community Hospital is about 17 miles away. Dr. Gomez makes hospital rounds on his own patients and he makes an average of 5-6 inpatient visits per day. He also maintains nursing home privileges at Heritage Hall, a 200-bed facility in Tazewell, Virginia.

Residents who train with Dr. Gomez may be able to stay in apartments leased by Clinch Valley Medical Center. Alternately, they may stay in local hotels ­ Comfort Inn, Day's Inn, Super 8, Timberline Lodge, Bedrock Inn, or Cuz's Cabins Bed and Breakfast. GMEC can attempt to locate furnished apartments for residents, but we cannot guarantee results because short-term rentals are extremely difficult to secure in rural areas.

Columbia Clinch Valley Medical Center is a 200-bed acute care facility in Richlands, Virginia. The hospital offers an expanded range of services: emergency, inpatient and outpatient care, intensive care, surgery and anesthesia, pathology, radiology, imaging, nuclear medicine, obstetrics, critical care nursery, cardiopulmonary rehab, diabetic unit, cardiac catheterization, radiation therapy, laboratory, nutrition, physical therapy, occupational therapy, respiratory therapy, pharmacy, and home health. Specialties represented on the staff include allergy & immunology, anesthesiology, cardiology, emergency medicine, family practice, general practice, gastroenterology, general and vascular surgery, internal medicine, neurology, obstetrics & gynecology, ophthalmology, otolaryngology, pathology, nuclear medicine, oncology, pediatrics, podiatry, psychiatry, pulmonary medicine, radiology, oral surgery, orthopedic surgery, plastic surgery, and urology.

Tazewell Community Hospital is a 56-bed acute care facility in Tazewell, Virginia. The hospital offers a standard range of services ­ emergency, inpatient and outpatient care, intensive care, surgery and anesthesia, radiology, imaging, cardiopulmonary, laboratory, nutrition, physical therapy, speech therapy, occupational therapy, respiratory therapy, pharmacy, pathology, and home health. Specialties represented on the hospital staff include emergency medicine, internal medicine, family practice, pathology, pediatrics, general and vascular surgery, general practice, radiology, and dentistry. The hospital operates an outpatient clinic to access services from the following specialties: cardiology, otolaryngology, plastic surgery, orthopedics, podiatry, pulmonary medicine, rheumatology, and nephrology. Tazewell Community is an affiliate of the Carilion Health System.

The population of Richlands is 4,456 and an additional 5,000 ­ 7,000 people live in the surrounding communities of Cedar Bluff, Claypool Hill, and Pounding Mill. Tazewell County has a population of 45,960. Major elements of the Tazewell economy are personal services, manufacturing, retail trade, coal mining, transfer payments (retirement pensions, disability income, and welfare benefits), and agriculture. In 1995, the largest employers were Clinch Valley Medical Center, the school board, Southwest Virginia Community College, Long Airdox Company (mining machinery), and Cumberland Mountain Community Services.

Four lanes of U.S. Highway 460 join with four lanes of U.S. Highway 19 just south of Richlands. There are two malls and several shopping centers in the area, along with any number of local and franchised restaurants, cinema screens, discount stores, groceries, and specialty boutiques. Area attractions include the Crab Orchard Museum & Pioneer Park, Burke's Garden, Pocahontas Exhibition Coal Mine, Cedar Bluff Mill, and Breaks Interstate Park.
