In 1998, Dr. Sirk completed a three-year residency program with Marshall University Family Practice in Huntington, West Virginia. He has been practicing with Twin County Family Care Centers since 1998.

Dr. Sirk sees patients 40 hours per week in an office setting: 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Monday thru Friday. There are six exam rooms on the premises and a laboratory. Patients who need other services are referred to Twin County Regional Hospital. Dr. Sirk performs minor surgical procedures on the premises, including skin excisions, wound repair, and cryo-surgery.

About 15 patients visit Dr. Sirk in the office each day. He estimates that he and his associates combined see an average of 75-90 patients a day. About 20% of his patients are under the age of 18; another 40% are adults; and about 50% are adults over the age of 65. Dr. Sirk estimates that 40% of his patients are covered by Medicaid or Medicare; 50% have commercial insurance coverage; and about 10% are uninsured.

Dr. Sirk maintains Medicine and ICU/CCU privileges at Twin County Regional Hospital in Galax, Virginia. The hospital is less than 2 miles from Galax Family Care. The Twin-County practice group includes hospitalists who admit and care for most patients. Through a 1-800 phone link with North Carolina Baptist Hospital in Winston-Salem, Dr. Sirk can access a full complement of sub-specialists for consultations twenty-four hours a day.

Dr. Sirk really enjoys generalist medicine. Personally, he is interested in most outdoor sports, especially kayaking, bicycling, and bow hunting.

Residents who train with Dr. Sirk will learn to practice quality ambulatory medicine in a rural area. They will have opportunities to work with excellent emergency physicians at Twin-County Regional Hospital, taking care of patients with strokes, heart attacks, and other evolving problems.

Residents who train with Dr. Sirk may choose to stay in local motels -Holiday Inn Express, Super 8, Hampton Inn, Knight's Inn, etc. GMEC can attempt to locate furnished homes or apartments for residents, but we cannot guarantee results because short-term rental properties are extremely difficult to secure in rural areas.

Named for a mountain wildflower, Galax is an independent city with a population of about 6,700 on the border between Carroll County (pop. 26,504) and Grayson County (pop. 16,278). Quiet hollows, pastured hills, and patches of dense forest characterize the local landscape. To the east, the land rises to the scenic heights of the Blue Ridge Mountains. To the west are more spectacular heights that are seldom seen - Mount Rogers, Whitetop, and the Iron Hills. Galax is lodged in a beautiful setting.

Major elements of the economy are manufacturing industries, transfer payments (retirement pensions, disability income, and welfare benefits), retail trade and personal services. In 1995, the largest employers in the city were Hanes Printables (knit underwear), Consolidated Glass and Mirror, Webb Furniture, Vaughan Furniture, Vaughan Basset Furniture, Twin-County Regional Hospital, and Dixon Lumber. The Galax workforce includes about 8,500 people; almost 2,000 more people work in Galax than live there.

Four lanes of US Highway 58 access Galax about 10 miles west of an interchange with US Interstate 77. There are several shopping centers in Galax, replete with department stores, restaurants, cinema screens, groceries, discount stores, and specialty boutiques. Three outdoor recreation centers are within 30 miles of Galax Grayson Highlands State Park, New River Trail State Park, and the Mount Rogers National Recreation Area. These parks have facilities for camping, picnicking, hiking, biking, swimming, boating, fishing, hunting, and horseback riding. Mount Rogers is the highest peak in Virginia.
