Phone: (276) 686-5116 Holly Smith is a board certified family physician with a practice in Rural Retreat, Virginia. She has a partner, DR. Jennifer Bennett, also a board-certified family physician. Born June 2, 1961 in San Jose, California, Dr. Smith is a citizen of the United States. She is married to Jimmy Cook and they have one child Emily, born in 1998. Dr. Smith holds a BS in Biology, awarded in 1985 by Old Dominion University, Norfolk, Virginia. She earned an MD in 1989 from Eastern Virginia Medical School. In 1992, she completed a three-year residency at the Lynchburg Family Practice Residency Program in Lynchburg Virginia. The Lynchburg program is affiliated with the Department of Family Medicine at the University of Virginia, Charlottesville. Dr. Smith has been practicing in Rural Retreat since completing her residency training in 1992. At one time or another since her arrival in Rural Retreat, Dr. Smith has chaired the Medical Ethics Committee at Wythe County Community Hospital; served as Medical Director of Pediatrics for Wythe County Community; sat on the Medical Executive Committee for the hospital; been Assistant Medical Director for the hospice service at Wythe County Community; and volunteered her professional services for the Wythe-Bland Free Clinic in Wytheville.
Dr. Smith sees an average of 10-20 patients per day in the office. She estimates that 20% of her patients are children under the age of 12, 50% are adults or adolescents, and 30% are adults over the age of 65. About 20% of Smith's patients are covered by Medicaid, 30% are enrolled in Medicare, 40% are covered by commercial carriers, and 10% are uninsured. Dr. Smith visits patients at home as needed, mostly those who are homebound or terminally ill. She does not practice obstetrics, but she treats medical problems for pregnant patients in consultation with area obstetricians. Sports medicine is not a large part of her practice, although she does treat students who present to the office with injuries. Dr. Smith can arrange for residents to participate in home visits or serve as team doctors for local sports teams as they wish.
Smith really enjoys pediatrics and, prior to the advent of pediatricians in Wytheville, she spent five years in charge of the newborn nursery at Wythe County Community Hospital. As a rural physician, Dr. Smith sees patients with a broad range of acute and chronic problems and she does procedures in the office and hospital (thrombolytics, ventilator management) that are often reserved for subspecialists in suburban and urban communities. Dr. Smith considers her work prototypical of rural practices that offer care from patients of all ages, "from diaper to diaper." She is enthusiastic about the practice of rural medicine. With a small child in the house, Dr. Smith finds herself reading a lot of Dr. Seuss. The Smiths live in a passive solar-powered house and enjoy organic gardening. They have a large swimming pool and hot tub and love to relax in the water. They also enjoy "four-wheeling" with off-road vehicles, exploring the hills and hollows near Rural Retreat. Residents who train with Dr. Smith may be able to stay in a number of hotels or bed-and-breakfasts in Wytheville Holiday Inn, Quality Inn, Hampton Inn, Ramada Inn, Comfort Inn, Red Carpet Inn, Days Inn, Roadway Inn, Super 8, Sleep Inn, etc. The town is blessed with motels, some of which offer efficiency suites. GMEC can try to locate furnished apartments or houses for residents, but we cannot guarantee results because short-term rentals are extremely difficult to secure in rural areas. For esoteric shopping or evening entertainment, local people drive to Wytheville, Marion, Abingdon, or Roanoke, where there are opportunities for movie-going, live theater and fine dining. Within 30-45 minutes of Rural Retreat are several state parks and national recreation areas Hungry Mother State Park, Lick Creek Natural Area, New River Trail State Park, Grayson Highlands State Park, and Mount Rogers National Recreation Area. These places have a varying mix of facilities for swimming, fishing, hunting, biking, hiking, picnicking, and camping. Rural Retreat is located in Wythe County, Virginia. Major elements of the Wythe County economy are manufacturing, transfer payments (retirement pensions, disability income, and welfare benefits), agriculture, retail trade, and personal services.
