Mary Anne Smith is the sole hospital-based physician at Tazewell Community Hospital. She spends about 30% of her time seeing ambulatory patients in the hospital's clinic and about 70% of her time with patients she admits to the hospital. A nurse practitioner works with Dr. Smith and spends most of her time with ambulatory patients. The hospital also plans to employ a physician assistant for the outpatient clinic. Dr. Smith earned a BA degree in Biology from Holy Family College in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in 1965. She received an MD degree from the University of Santo Tomas, Manila, Philippines in 1973. She interned at V. Luna Military Hospital, Armed Forces of the Philippines, Quezon City, Philippines from 1973 to 1974 and then completed an internal medicine residency at Albert Einstein Medical Center in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania from 1975 to 1978. Dr. Smith is board-eligible in internal medicine. From 1979 to 1994, Dr. Smith had a private practice in Feasterville, Pennsylvania, near Philadelphia, where she maintained privileges at Frankford Hospital on the Torresdale Campus. From December 1994 to April 1995, she was an independent contractor with the Village of Newtown Medical Center in Newtown, Pennsylvania. Then from June to August 1995, she served as locum tenens with Tazewell Family Physicians in Tazewell, Virginia. She very much enjoyed her small-town experience in Tazewell and, in December 1995, accepted employment with Tazewell Community as its first staff physician. Dr. Smith is interested in computers but her clinic is not equipped for Internet access at the present time (10/99). The hospital does have a management information system, primarily used for billing purposes, which can track the number and diagnoses of patients seen by residents. The hospital's medical library also has Internet access.
Dr. Smith sees mainly adults and older adults, both in her clinic practice and in the hospital. She estimates that 50% of her patients are adults over the age of 65; 48% are adults between the ages of 20 and 64; and 2% are adolescents under the age of 20. Dr. Smith finds the practice of medicine more fascinating now than she did in medical school. She is extremely happy that she is able to provide good continuity of care for patients in her current practice. She particularly enjoys cardiology and diabetes management. She is constantly learning and she loves case discussions. Dr. Smith believes that residents will especially enjoy working in a small hospital where they can become personally acquainted with patients. Dr. Smith's personal interests are many and varied. She enjoys pets, computers, art, philosophy, creative writing, learning about different cultures, and exploring alternative medicine.
