Phone: (276) 964-6771 Roy Thomson is a board-certified pediatrician and a fellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics. He practices at Clinch Valley Physicians, Inc., a large, multi-specialty clinic located at Claypool Hill, just outside of Richlands, Virginia. Clinch Valley Physicians is known locally as "The Clinic." The staff includes specialists in allergy/immunology, cardiology, family practice, gastroenterology, general surgery, internal medicine, obstetrics/gynecology, orthopedics, pediatrics, pulmonary medicine, radiology, urology, and vascular surgery. The Clinic is operated by the physicians. A five-member Board of Directors formulates policies of the Clinic and employs a professional administrator to conduct daily operations. Dr. Thomson was born March 16, 1959 in Changanacherry, Kottayam, Kerala, India. He is now a United States citizen. He and his wife, Jancy, have two daughters, Irene and Ashley. Thomson has a special interest in neonatology and he cares for newborns in a Level I nursery at Clinch Valley Medical Center, a 200-bed acute care facility where he maintains admitting privileges. Thomson earned a bachelor's degree in 1976 at St. Berchman's College in Changanacherry, India. He attended medical school at the University of Kerala in India from 1976 to 1982 and graduated with distinction. Dr. Thomson completed an internship in 1982 at the Medical College Hospital and Institute for Child Health in Kottayam, India. He immigrated to the U.S. in 1984. Thomson worked in Chicago as a physician assistant until he attained a place in a pediatric residency program. He completed one year of training in 1988 at Mercy Hospital Medical Center and Wylers Children's Hospital in Chicago, Illinois. These programs are affiliated with the University of Chicago. Dr. Thomson finished his residency training in 1990 at Grady Hospital and Egleston Children's Hospital in Atlanta, Georgia. The Grady and Egleston programs are affiliates of the Emory University School of Medicine. Dr. Thomson worked as a pediatrician at the USAF Hospital at Warner Robins Air Force Base in Warner Robins, GA from 1990 to 1992. In 1992, he moved to Richlands, VA and began practicing with at the Clinic. There are three pediatricians in Clinic practice.
The Clinic offers highly sophisticated diagnostic and treatment services. Complete Radiology services are available. Top of the line CT scanner, mammography, ultrasound, and bone densitometer are all available. Mammography and ultrasound services are accredited by the American College of Radiology. The laboratory is Medicare and CLIA certified and offers services not usually found in physicians' offices. Dr. Thomson has a personal computer in his office and he welcomes its use by residents. Dr. Thomson estimates the number of patient visits per day for the pediatric practice to be around 100. Each physician sees 30-35 patients per day and uses 3 exam rooms. The patient population is comprised of infants 10%; children 80%; and adolescents 10%. About 60% of patients in the practice are covered by Medicaid; 39% are insured by commercial carriers; and 1% are uninsured.
With regard to personal interests, Dr. Thomson is an avid traveler, having visited 40 of the 50 United States and Canada. He has also traveled abroad to the United Kingdom, Germany, Greece, Switzerland, Sri Lanka, Dubai and India. He loves to take photos and make videos during his travels. He also loves music and computers. Residents who train with Dr. Thomson may be able to stay in apartments leased by the hospital. Alternately, they may stay in local hotels Comfort Inn, Day's Inn, Super 8, Timberline Lodge, Bedrock Inn, or Cuz's Cabins Bed and Breakfast. GMEC can attempt to locate furnished apartments for residents, but we cannot guarantee results because short-term rentals are extremely difficult to secure in rural areas. Columbia Clinch Valley Medical Center is a 200-bed acute care facility in Richlands, Virginia. The hospital offers an expanded range of services: emergency, inpatient and outpatient care, intensive care, surgery and anesthesia, pathology, radiology, imaging, nuclear medicine, obstetrics, critical care nursery, cardiopulmonary rehab, diabetic unit, cardiac catheterization, radiation therapy, laboratory, nutrition, physical therapy, occupational therapy, respiratory therapy, pharmacy, and home health. Specialties represented on the staff include allergy & immunology, anesthesiology, cardiology, emergency medicine, family practice, general practice, gastroenterology, general and vascular surgery, internal medicine, neurology, obstetrics & gynecology, ophthalmology, otolaryngology, pathology, nuclear medicine, oncology, pediatrics, podiatry, psychiatry, pulmonary medicine, radiology, oral surgery, orthopedic surgery, plastic surgery, and urology. The population of Richlands is 4,456. An additional 5,000 7,000 people live in the surrounding communities of Cedar Bluff, Claypool Hill, and Pounding Mill. Tazewell County has a population of 45,960. Major elements of the Tazewell economy are personal services, manufacturing, retail trade, coal mining, transfer payments (retirement pensions, disability income, and welfare benefits), and agriculture. In 1995, the largest employers were Clinch Valley Medical Center, the school board, Southwest Virginia Community College, Long Airdox Company (mining machinery), and Cumberland Mountain Community Services. Four lanes of U.S. Highway 460 join with four lanes of U.S.
Highway 19 just south of Richlands. There are two malls and several
shopping centers in the area, along with any number of local
and franchised restaurants, cinema screens, discount stores,
groceries, and specialty boutiques. Area attractions include
the Crab Orchard Museum & Pioneer Park, Burke's Garden, Pocahontas
Exhibition Coal Mine, Cedar Bluff Mill, and Breaks Interstate
Park.
