Phone: (276) 466- 5321 Jane Toothman is a board-certified family practice physician with added qualifications in geriatric medicine. Dr. Toothman and Cathy Maine, FNP, operate a solo out-patient family practice. Dr. Toothman was born June 25, 1940 in Parkersburg, West Virginia. She received a bachelor's degree in Pre-Medicine from West Virginia University, then earned a medical doctorate degree from West Virginia University School of Medicine in 1965. In 1966, she completed a rotating internship at Grant Hospital in Columbus, Ohio, gaining experience in pediatrics, obstetrics, surgery and internal medicine. Dr. Toothman is a Fellow of the American Academy of Family Physicians and holds a certificate of added qualifications in geriatrics, awarded in 1998. Upon completing her medical training, Dr. Toothman's interest in rural medicine took her to the Coeburn Medical Center in Coeburn, Virginia. There, she practiced family medicine, including obstetrics, from 1966 until 1976. She also worked part-time in the emergency room at Bristol Memorial Hospital during her tenure in Coeburn. In 1977, Dr. Toothman accepted a position as Associate Professor at the Bristol Family Practice Center, a residency program affiliated with East Tennessee State University's James H. Quillen College of Medicine. She served the residency first as Assistant Program Director, then as Acting Program Director, and then, during her last year, as Program Director. In 1979, Dr. Toothman re-entered private practice. She was a part of the Wellmonth Health System from 1996-2005. From time to time, Dr. Toothman precepts students in clinical rotations from the ETSU Quillen College of Medicine.
About 50% of Dr. Toothman's patients are over the age of 65, 30% are younger adults, 10% are adolescents, and 10% are children. Her practice includes few infants. The majority of her patients (around 55%) are covered by Medicare or Medicaid, 40% have private insurance, and 5% are uninsured. The practice's management information system can track the number and diagnoses of patients. Dr. Toothman has access to the Internet on the premises of her office. Dr. Toothman maintains active privileges at Bristol Regional Medical Center, about eight miles from her practice, just across the Virginia/Tennessee border. She can admit patients to the hospital, but concentrates on outpatient care and preventive medicine. Obstetrical patients and those with obvious specialty needs are referred to the appropriate specialists. Unless she is out of town, Dr. Toothman takes call for her own patients, 24-hours a day, seven days a week. Residents are welcome to join Dr. Toothman on call as they wish. Dr. Toothman maintains nursing home privileges at NHC Healthcare, a 200-bed nursing home about seven miles from her practice. She visits nursing home patients once a month. Given the maturity of her practice, much of Dr. Toothman's time is devoted to caring for geriatric patients, although she enjoys the full range of family practice. Many patients followed Dr. Toothman from Coeburn to Bristol where she continues to care for them and their families. Dr. Toothman has a house on South Holston Lake and enjoys water sports, fly fishing, and playing the hammer dulcimer. Dr. Toothman will accept only female residents. Residents who train with Dr. Toothman may wish to stay in the call quarters available at East Tennessee State University's Bristol Family Practice Residency Program. Else, they may stay in reasonably priced bed and breakfasts (3 in Bristol) or motels (22 in Bristol). GMEC can attempt to secure furnished apartments or houses for residents, but we can offer no guarantees because short-term rentals are hard to find in rural areas.
