Deborah Weddington is a board-certified family physician in practice
at MedExpress in Bristol, Virginia. Partnered with Dr. Weddington is
Darlene Litton, M.D., who is also a GMEC preceptor. The practice also
includes one nurse practitioner.
Dr. Weddington was born April 22, 1954 in Winston-Salem, North Carolina.
She was an undergraduate at Longwood College in Farmville, Virginia,
where she received a BA degree in Science (Chemistry and Biology) and
an MS degree in Secondary Education. She taught Chemistry, Biology and
Physics at the high school level for ten years before entering medical
school at the University of Virginia in 1992. She earned an MD in 1996
and completed a three-year residency in Family Practice at Wheeling
Hospital in Wheeling, West Virginia in June 1999. That same month she
began practice at Saltville Medical Center. Dr. Weddington joined MedExpress
in August 2003.

Weddington works in an office setting 8:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. four days
a week and 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. every third Saturday. The office suite
has four exam rooms, a waived medical laboratory, and facilities for
emergency care and minor surgery. Typical procedures performed in the
office are the suturing of lacerations, mole and wart removal, biopsy
of skin lesions, PAP smears, and foot care for those with diabetes.
Dr. Weddington sees an average of 25-30 patients a day, as does the
other physician at MedExpress. The nurse practitioner sees walk-ins
and patients with acute illnesses. About 67% of Dr. Weddington's patients
are adults; 8% are geriatric adults; 15% are children; and 10% are adolescents.
The majority of patients seen by Dr. Weddington (52%) are covered by
Medicaid or Medicare; 27% have private insurance, and 21% are uninsured..
Dr. Weddington maintains courtesy privileges at Johnston Memorial Hospital
and Bristol Regional Medical Center. She concentrates on out-patient
care and generally refers patients to hospitalists for in-patient services.
There will be no call expectations for residents.
Dr. Weddington enjoys family medicine and has a special interest in
women's health, pediatrics and mental health issues. Dr. Weddington
and her husband enjoy playing traditional bluegrass music and spending
time with family. They have two sons, both of whom are graduate students.
Residents who train with Dr. Weddington may stay in reasonably priced
bed and breakfasts (3 in Bristol) or motels (22 in Bristol). GMEC can
attempt to secure furnished apartments or houses for residents, but
we can offer no guarantees because short-term rentals are hard to find
