Phone: 276-228-8686 William "Bill" Tomiak, M.D. is a board-certified family physician who practices in association with four other physicians at Carilion Family Medicine of Wytheville. His partners are Judson Booker, III, M.D., Wayne Horney, M.D., and James Stone, M.D. His partners are also boarded in Family Practice. Born June 9, 1971 on the U.S. Naval Base in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, Dr. Tomiak is married to Julia Tomiak. Bill and Julia have three children - Alex (b. 2000) and Rose (b. 2002), and Josh (b. 2004). Dr. Tomiak graduated from the University of Virginia, Charlottesville
in 1993, where he majored in Biology and minored in Spanish. Upon graduation,
he attended the Medical College of Virginia at Virginia Commonwealth
University in Richmond, taking an M.D. degree in May 1998. That summer,
he began training at Riverside Family Practice in Newport News, Virginia.
He completed a three-year residency in June 2001. Dr. Tomiak has been
with Carilion Family Medicine of Wytheville since 2001.
The practice has electronic medical records, Internet access, and a management information system that can track the number and diagnoses of patients seen by visiting residents. Carilion has sophisticated electronic systems for the maintenance of medical records, outcome-based quality assurance, and physician productivity. Dr. Tomiak has Newborn, Pediatric, Medicine, and ICU/CCU privileges at Wythe County Community Hospital in Wytheville, Virginia. The hospital is located about one mile from his office and he visits 0-3 patients a day in the hospital. Dr. Tomiak is on call one night out of five and every fifth weekend. There are no call expectations for residents.
Dr. Tomiak admits patients to two nursing homes in Wytheville - Asbury Center at Birdmont (152 beds) and Edgemont Center (60 beds). The nursing homes are less than 10 minutes from Dr. Tomiak's office. Pediatrics is an area of special interest for Dr. Tomiak and he wants to increase the number of newborns, infants, and children in his practice. He is also interested in preventive medicine and is working to include a wellness component in a community recreation center under development in Wytheville. Family is paramount among Dr. Tomiak's personal interests. He, Julia, and the children enjoy a range of outdoor activities, from road and mountain biking to hiking to kayaking. The Tomiaks attend St. Mary's Catholic Church in Wytheville, where Bill and Julia participate in the young adult club. Dr. Tomiak has a fresh clinical perspective, having only recently completed his residency training. He has a solid understanding of the preceptor-resident relationship and looks forward to teaching. Dr. Tomiak says that Wytheville is a very supportive place to practice medicine and that living in small town doesn't mean that there is nothing to do. He and his family and friends have an active social life and really love rural living. Dr. Tomiak and his partners can arrange for residents to train with local obstetricians, general surgeons, and radiologists. Offices of the public health department, the local department of social services, and a mental health counseling center are located on the campus of Wythe County Community Hospital. The close proximity of these human service agencies makes the hospital an excellent site to practice - and study - community medicine. There are several manufacturing centers in Wytheville, and residents with an interest in occupational medicine may particularly enjoy a rotation with Dr. Tomiak. Medical teams from the Carilion practice sometimes visit local factories to perform screening tests for workers and encourage workplace health and safety. Residents who train with Dr. Tomiak may choose to stay in a number of area hotels: Holiday Inn, Quality Inn, Hampton Inn, Ramada Inn, Comfort Inn, Red Carpet Inn, Days Inn, Roadway Inn, Super 8, Sleep Inn, etc. Wytheville is blessed with many motels and restaurants. The community also boasts several bed and breakfast inns. GMEC can try to locate furnished apartments or houses for residents, but we cannot guarantee results because short-term rentals are extremely difficult to secure in rural areas.
Major elements of the economy are manufacturing, transfer payments (retirement pensions, disability income, and welfare benefits), agriculture, retail trade, and personal services. In 1995, the largest employers were Wythe County Community Hospital, Textron (bolts, nuts, rivets, washers), Emerson Electric (process control instruments), the school board, and Kingston Warren (mechanical rubber goods.) US Interstate 81 intersects with US Interstate 77 in Wytheville and travelers have sparked a booming motel and restaurant trade. The town offers several shopping centers, cinema screens, groceries, discount stores, antique stores, and specialty boutiques. Within a 30-mile radius of Wytheville are several outdoor recreation centers - Claytor Lake State Park, New River Trail State Park, Hungry Mother State Park, Mount Rogers National Recreation Area, and Jefferson National Forest. These centers have facilities for camping, picnicking, hiking, biking, swimming, boating, fishing, hunting, and horseback riding. See the county/city profiles for more information about Wythe County and the people who live there.
