TO: Faculty and Staff
From: Human Resources
Subject: 2008 Holiday Schedule
Date: January 21, 2008
We are pleased to inform you of the 2008 Holiday Schedule including the additional leave time granted by the Governor. The chart below shows our 2008 holiday schedule and for your comparison, the column on the right shows the State Holiday Schedule provided by the Virginia Department of Human Resource Management (DHRM). Policy allows state agencies to have alternative holiday schedules provided the number of state holidays remains the same. There are routinely 12 official state holidays and for 2008, the Governor already announced 16 extra hours of holiday time (2 days) for state employees for a total of 14 days.

Supervisors are encouraged to adopt a liberal leave policy during holiday periods to accommodate employee requests, as long as essential services continue to be provided. We recognize that due to business necessity some departments may be required to be open and will not be able to observe scheduled holidays. In those instances, essential college employees who must work on a holiday should be given adequate advance notice for personal planning purposes. Questions regarding the provision of essential customer services should be directed to your respective vice chancellor.
Should the Governor grant further additional holiday time during the year, Human Resources will disseminate this information. If you have questions regarding this schedule, please call Sim Ewing at ext. 0133 or Francene Meade at ext. 0142.
