Letters of the Exploration and Conquest
A very affordable, short program that enables students to visit the origins of the age of exploration:
Lisbon, Seville and Madrid.
In this special topics course entitled Letters of the Exploration and Conquest (SPAN395) students study the Spanish and Portuguese exploration and conquest of the New World in Huelva (Spain), Columbus’s port of departure, Seville, the Port of the Indies, and Lisbon. Students will read first-hand accounts of the explorers and Conquistadors, and visit the Navigation Museum in Lisbon. Readings will include Christopher Columbus, Fray Bartolome de las Casas, Bernal Diaz and others. Students attend classes at the University of Huelva. Participants have the opportunity to attend lectures, museum visits, and cultural trips associated with the New World.
This course may also be taken as an English course(Engl 312) which satisfies the General Education requirement. As such, it will be offered in English as well as in Spanish. Students will receive an additional 2 credits as Humanities (Hum 195).
Included in the program fee of $3,500:
-Madrid and surrounding area
-Seville: the tomb of Columbus and the Archive of the Indies
-Lisbon: the tomb of Vasco da Gama
-Cascais: view of the Atlantic coast line
-Algarve: the spectacular beaches of southern Portugal
-Sagres: home of Prince Henry’s School of Navigation
