Short Term Study Abroad Workshop.

The International Programs Office offers a workshop about "How to Prepare and Direct a Short Study Abroad Program". All Faculty interested in directing a study abroad trip are invited to participate in this workshop. The following topics will be discussed:

-       Planning and designing a SA trip. 

-       Setting the Budget. 

-       Academic contents. 

-       DIY vs. providers; exchange and hybrid models. 

-       Safety and health issues. Insurance. 

-       Financial support/scholarships. 

-       Advertising your trips- Marketing and Promotion. 

-       Eligibility and selection of students. 

-       Logistics. 

-       Liability issues. 

-       Tips every director should know. 

-       Forms and procedures. 

-       Risk Management. 

-       Evaluation and Reentry.

The workshop will take place on Friday, August 15th, at 9 - 12 a.m. in the Library. 

Spanish Professors Invited to UVA-Wise to Conduct Research and Teach during Fall semester 2008.

Dr. Fernando Rubio, a tenured member of the English department at the University of Huelva (Spain) and his wife, M. Ángeles Bonilla, an experienced journalist, will form part of our faculty here at UVA-Wise during the fall semester of 2008. Dr. Rubio conducts research in the field of linguistics applied to the teaching and acquisition of foreign languages. MORE>>>

 

Students came back from the UVa-Wise Spring and Summer Trips to Spain/Portugal, United Kingdom, China and Austria.

More than 40 students participated this year in one of our four Study Abroad and Educational Trips

UVa-Wise signs new agreement to expand study opportunities into Australia, Asia and Europe.

The University of Virginia's College at Wise has just signed with Australearn programs to even further expand their study-abroad opportunities for UVA Wise students.  Sisters to the Australearn program, Eurolearn and Asialearn, add a total of 51 more Universities available for semester/year/summer/winter studying.  Within the Australearn program alone are 34 chances to study in either Australia, New Zealand, or Fiji. MORE>>>

Toyo University offers UVa-Wise students chance to study in Japan.

Students of The University of Virginia’s College at Wise now have the opportunity to study abroad in Japan regardless of their proficiency in speaking the Japanese language, thanks to a new exchange program offered by Toyo University. MORE>>>

Fall of communism to be focus of UVa-Wise study abroad program in Russia and Europe.

In cooperation with the International Student Exchange Program (ISEP), The University of Virginia’s College at Wise will offer students the opportunity to closely examine the fall of communism with a study abroad trip in January 2009 to Estonia, Russia and the Ukraine.

The three week-program, “After Empire: The Collapse of Communism and Beyond,” will be offered through the University of Tartu in Estonia, St. Petersburg State University in Russia and Kyiv-ohyla Academy in Ukraine.

UVa-Wise exchange agreement with Glamorgan University offers study abroad opportunity in United Kingdom.

The Office of International Programs at The University of Virginia’s College at Wise scheduled a full slate of events to celebrate the eighth annual International Week. Members of the community, faculty, staff and students are invited to participate in the celebration set for Nov. 12-16.Students from The University of Virginia’s College at Wise will now have the opportunity to study in the United Kingdom thanks to the signing of an international agreement with Glamorgan University in Pontypridd, Wales. UVa-Wise international students discuss American experiences.

A panel discussion by UVa-Wise international students will take place Monday, Oct. 8, at 1 p.m. in the Dogwood room of the C. Bascom Slemp Student Center.

Students from Turkey, Russia, Kenya, Mexico, El Savador, Columbia and other countries will conduct a panel discussion about their home countries and their experiences in the United States.

The event, which is part of the Special Lecture/Faculty Colloquia Series, is free and open to the public.

New Study Abroad Opportunities!

The University of Virginia at Wise has just signed a new agreement with ISEP (International Student Exchange Program). This exciting program allows UVA-Wise students to study in 137 universities from 39 different countries, such as Australia, Brazil, Ghana, South Africa, Japan, China, Korea, most of Europe and Latin America.  What makes this program particularly interesting is that students will pay UVA-Wise’s tuition, room and board fees while studying abroad.  For more information check www.isep.org or visit our office in Darden 105.

Winter/Summer 2008 Programs Abroad.

The International Programs Office is launching five short study abroad programs in Ecuador, Mexico, Spain/Portugal, United Kingdom and Belgium.  These programs offer an excellent opportunity for immersion in a foreign culture while gaining academic credits. Students will travel with faculty from UVa Wise. For more information contact the International Programs Office (Darden Hall 105).

International Student Leadership Conference (ISLC).

The Multi Cultural Alliance has attended the International Student Leadership Conference which was hosted by James Madison University and Eastern Mennonite University during the weekend of March 22-27, 2007. The theme of the conference for this year was “Transforming cultural experiences into leadership opportunities”. MORE>>

2007 UVA-Wise Summer Programs in Europe! 

Two groups from the College have just returned from programs of three and a half weeks in Europe. Both groups traveled with professors from the Department of Language and Literature. Dr. Anne Gilfoil took a group of nine students to southern Spain (Huelva) and Portugal. Professor Clara Adame de Heu took a group to Bruges, Belgium. Dr. Gilfoil’s group studied the letters of the exploration of the New World while visiting Seville, home of the Archive of the Indies (which stores all the documents of the exploration), Lisbon, and Madrid. Professor Adame de Heu’s group traveled in the Low Countries, in France, and in England visiting the important sites of the European Union. Both groups describe their experiences as life-changing.

UVa-Wise faculty and staff spring break trip to Mexico.


The Office of International Programs organized visit to our College's sister institution in Saltillo, Mexico, during the Spring break 2007. The purpose of the trip is to fortify relations with the University of Monterrey-Tec in Saltillo and to strengthen bonds among members of the UVa-Wise team.

Spring Break Trip to London.

During Spring Break, Dr. John Mark Adrian of the Language and literature Department and his wife Wendy took a group of ten students to visit London and its historic landmarks including London Bridge and Westminster Abbey. Most of the students were enrolled in Dr. John Mark Adrian's "London in Literature" course. MORE>>

The first annual UVa-Wise Study Abroad Fair.

The Office of International Programs hosted the first annual Study Abroad Fair at the Chapel of All Faiths on February 21, 2007. Representives of different study abroad programs gave UVa-Wise students information on the assortment of trips and programs available. MORE>>

UVa-Wise signs fifth international agreement.
The University of Virginia’s College at Wise signed an international agreement in October 2006 to partner with El Tec de Monterrey Campus Saltillo in future educational endeavors. MORE>>

UVa-Wise students learn about business during study in Mexico.
A group of seven students from The University of Virginia’s College at Wise traveled to Monterrey, Mexico, from May 21 to May 28, to learn about business south of the border and how it relates to the United States and Southwest Virginia. MORE>>
