Saxophone Masterclass

VPAR Events - Mon, 03/21/2016 - 8:00am

Dr. David Allen, a professor of saxophone at Radford University is the featured saxophone performer and instructor this year.  His teaching responsibilities include the saxophone, clarinet, and chamber music.  The saxophone masterclass is an opportunity for all saxophone players—college saxophonists, high school and middle school students or community members—to spend a day with fellow musicians while receiving lessons from some of the nation’s top saxophonists.  The free event gives participants a chance to hone their skills. The event, which will begin at 9 a.m. and conclude at 4 p.m., also introduces students from the region’s high schools to the music programs offered at UVa-Wise. The program is open to everyone from all parts of Southwest Virginia, East Tennessee and Eastern Kentucky.

This event will provide an outstanding learning experience for any instrumental music student.  The masterclass is for anyone who loves playing saxophone and who wants to improve their playing skills.  David Allen will perform a recital at 1:00 p.m. during the event in the Chapel of All Faiths, which will include a saxophone-clarinet duet with Suzanna Masters, Instructor of Music. He will teach and coach participants during the day.  He will offer critiques with constructive tips for any student wishing to play a solo excerpt for him to review.

Those who attend need only bring a saxophone in good working condition, playable reeds and related equipment. Lunch will be provided by the UVa-Wise Office of Admissions. For more information or to register, contact Suzanna Masters at 276-328-0271 or via email sem7m@uvawise.edu or Jessica Necessary at 276-328-0256 or via email at jjn5y@uvawise.edu.
