Matthew J. Maurer
Assistant Professor of Science Education

Originally from Ohio, I have been a part of the UVa Wise faculty since 2003. My teaching responsibilities are focused primarily in two areas: primary and secondary pre-service teacher education, and also non-majors biology. In addition, I am the faculty advisor for UVa Wise NSTA Student Chapter, and am involved in a number of science teaching related research projects on campus and in the community.

Research Interests
My research interests focus primarily on innovative and effective ways of improving student learning in biology courses, especially for non-majors. With needs for increasing science literacy and civic awareness being primary goals in science education, addressing specific student-centered areas, such as self-efficacy and self-regulation, have been shown to be extremely effective in increasing science learning and attitudes. My long-term research goal is to further investigate how to continue to improve science literacy in non-majors students, especially pre-service teachers.
