Work on the College's strategic plan, Envisioning 2020, began in the fall of 2010. As the college’s Fulfilling the Dream campaign neared its end, the UVa-Wise Foundation, Inc. Board of Directors discussed and gave input on the College’s future and the next steps in its successful development efforts.
In October 2010, the UVa-Wise Board met for a planning retreat that included the participation of the chair of the U.Va. Board of Visitors Committee on Wise. The retreat focused on strategies that would take the College to the next level of excellence by the end of the decade.
In November 2010, Chancellor David J. Prior appointed seventeen members to the Envisioning 2020 (E2020) Committee. The E2020 Committee included members representing the general faculty, teaching faculty, staff and students. The committee was chaired by Provost Sanders Huguenin, Ph.D. and met regularly beginning in December 2010.
The E2020 Committee began by gathering as much input as possible from the College's many constituencies, as well as gathering and reviewing reports and data that include:
- Results of the UVa-Wise Board retreat in October 2010 and previous input from the UVa-Wise Foundation and UVa-Wise Alumni Boards of Directors
- Creating the Future 2012, the College's last strategic plan and that plan's progress reports
- Peer benchmarking on 42 data points including efficiencies, faculty salaries, freshman profiles, enrollment, revenues, retention, staffing, expenses, need-based aid, etc. to five different peer groups, including institutions within 50 miles, national public baccalaureate institutions, COPLAC institutions, four-year VA institutions and public baccalaureate with 30-40% of students receiving PELL
- UVa-Wise historical and current data on enrollment (FT/PT, Level, Out/In-state, etc.), freshman profile, retention, faculty salaries, faculty productivity, degrees conferred by major, IPEDS Finance Data, endowment assets, and more
- Operating budget, current and historical. Funding trends and sources of non-general fund revenue
- Top Jobs legislation, restructuring legislation, IPS, historical trends in higher education, and capital outlay plans
- Presentations by the College’s leadership on various issues
- Results of multiple campus forums for staff, faculty and students hosted by the E2020 Committee and held in spring 2011
- Results of interviews with thought leaders
- Top Jobs six-year plan input, review and integration
The E2020 Committee completed a vision statement and then from the extensive input and data, subcommittees developed goals and strategies. After several revisions and some additional external input, the E2020 Committee completed the first Goals and Strategies Framework in February 2012. After Chancellor Prior's untimely death, the E2020 committee recommended to the Senior Staff and President Teresa A. Sullivan that the final plan be completed once a new chancellor had an opportunity to review the goals and strategies and provide input.
Upon beginnnig her tenure in January 2013, Chancellor Donna P. Henry charged the E2020 to continuing refining the document into a strong, aspirational plan with thematic goals. Various constiuencies reviewed the final draft and an online survey portal requested additional input. The Envisioning 2020 strategic plan includes timelines, responsibilities, and metrics. The plan was approved by the UVa-Wise Board on October 2, 2013 and by the U.Va. Board of Visitors on November 15, 2013.

Creating the Future ▪ 2012
A strategic plan presented to the UVa-Wise College Board on May 18, 2007.
Since 2000, The University of Virginia’s College at Wise has made extraordinary progress in its academic programs, physical plant, and enrollment growth. Building on this momentum, our academic community must develop a clear vision of what UVa-Wise will be in the future. Though it would be naive to believe that from our current vantage point we could see all that lies ahead, we cannot abdicate our duty to define our dreams and set our sights high.
Creating the Future ▪ 2012 focuses our efforts in student success, outreach and visibility. Thirteen strategic initiatives will guide and unite the College’s faculty, staff, students, and leadership in moving forward:
Expand targeted academic programs – international business, MIS, CS, SE, human services counseling, nursing, visual and performing arts, and teacher education.
Create a college-wide global emphasis.
Enhance faculty and student research & creative works.
Streamline the community college transfer process.
Enhance the freshman and sophomore experiences.
Recruit and retain a diverse student body, faculty, and staff.
Build an attractive and accessible campus to accommodate growth
Establish an Office of Economic Development.
Prepare middle school students for the collegiate experience and create faculty partnerships between high schools, community colleges, and UVa-Wise.
Develop and implement a University/College partnership in healthcare, K-12 education, and economic development.
Strengthen service to community and region.
Complete a successful fundraising campaign.
Increase UVa-Wise’s visibility in Virginia and the nation.
To facilitate thoughtful discussion about long-term enrollment growth, financial growth models for three enrollment targets are included.
