Institutional effectiveness is an important concept in higher education with a simple, but vital, purpose - to ensure the integrity of the teaching and learning process. To receive and maintain accreditation by one of our nation's regional accrediting boards, a college or university must demonstrate how it answers the question: Do the achieved results of your higher education institution fulfill its stated institutional mission and goals?
For UVa-Wise, the accrediting body is the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools, Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC). SACSCOC requires that UVa-Wise meet the following comprehensive standard:
The institution engages in ongoing, integrated, and institution-wide research-based planning and evaluation processes that (1) incorporate a systematic review of instiutitional mission, goals, and outcomes; (2) result in continuing imporvement in institutional quality; and (3) demonstrate the instiuttion is effectively accomplishing its mission.
The College’s institutional effectiveness process includes seven major components: mission, goals, strategic plan, annual planning and assessment, budgeting, program review, and master plan. A schematic of the institutional process can be viewed here.
