Employers find numerous opportunities for their businesses at UVa-Wise. Annual career fairs and programs like Advice & A Slice (see the Programs & Events link at left) provide employers with valuable time to share details of their organization and its offerings with UVa-Wise students. On campus interviews for internships and full-/part-time employment opportunities are also available during campus career fairs or at separately-scheduled times. Want to look at job listings for a potential new opportunity? Want to discuss a new career altogether? Career Development is just a phone call or email away for the UVa-Wise alumnus.
Our policy for On-Campus Interviews (OCR) with employers is very similar to that of college career services offices through Virginia and the country. Students who do not show up for on-campus interviews with employers are documented as having missed the interview and are made ineligible for on-campus interviews for the remainder of the semester. OCR privileges are reinstated the next semester. Students are also expected to write a letter of explanation and apology to the interviewing firm.
Why is this policy important? It is critical for students to recognize that they will soon be working professionals. It is important to conduct business with potential employers in a professional fashion, through voicemail messages, phone calls, letters, e-mails, resumes, and in person. Impressions are long-lasting, whether they are good or bad. Employers invest significant time and dollars recruiting at colleges; it is a privilege to have them come to our campus. When a student misses a scheduled On-Campus Interview with an employer, it affects the employer, other students, and the reputation of UVa-Wise and Career Development.
