Cavalier Women Battle Fighting Falcons on Saturday

About UVa-WiseCoach Kristin Kunzman's team continues to come up just short.  UVa-Wise is 1-2 in its last three games but the two losses have come by a combined eight points.  The Cavaliers dropped a two-point decision at West Liberty before falling 60-54 at Charleston on Saturday.  Junior guard Blair Harding has been playing her best ball of the season over the last two weeks.  In her last six games, the Baltimore native is averaging 22.7 points and 8.1 rebounds a contest.  With three games to play, Harding and her teammates have a one game lead over Concord for eighth place in the MEC standings.  Meaning, if the season ended today, UVa-Wise would be the last team to host an opening round tournament game.  The Cavaliers play at Shepherd on Monday before retuning home to face Concord in the regular season finale.

Weather Forces Schedule Changes for Six Sports

WISE - - Due to inclement weather, several schedule changes have occurred across the athletic department at UVa-Wise.  These changes include six sports, including moving Thursday's Mountain East Conference men's and women's basketball doubleheader at Shepherd University to Monday.

Cavalier Women Face Golden Eagles on Saturday

At 19-5 overall and 14-4 in the Mountain East Conference, Charleston enters the home stretch of the regular season in a first place tie with Shepherd.  Most recently, the Golden Eagles overcame a six-point halftime deficit to claim a 71-68 win at Concord.  Nichole Perry led the charge on offense as she scored 20 points and dished out five assists.  In its first meeting against UVa-Wise, Perry connected on 11-14 free throws to score 14 points, she finished with five assists in that game as well.  The Cavaliers finished the game with just five players as Kayla Carey, Kehanna Grayer, and Taylor Sandidge all fouled out in the overtime thriller.

Storylines – University of Charleston gameUniversity of Charleston is coming off of a 68-63 loss to Concord University entering Saturday's game against UVa-Wise.  In that game, the Golden Eagles had three players finish in double figures. Charleston was led by Octavius Green who finished with a team-high 15 points and  five rebounds. Jevonte Hughes assisted Green finishing with13 points and nine rebounds, while Chris Evans added 10 points.  The Golden Eagles shot 46.9 percent from the floor and 33.3 percent from beyond the arc against the Mountain Lions.  On the season, Chris Evans is scoring 12.3 points per game and pulling down 2.7 rebounds a game, while Jevonte Hughes is finishing with 11.8  points and 7.0 rebounds per game.   Charleston is scoring 74.5 points per game, while allowing 66.3 from opponents.

Harding's 28 Points Leads Cavalier Women to 87-48 Win over Yellow Jackets

WISE - - Blair Harding turned in one of the finer games of her collegiate career as she tallied 28 points, 11 rebounds, five assists, and four steals as UVa-Wise rolled to an 87-48 win over West Virginia State at the Prior Center.

Cavalier Men Come Up Short To Yellow Jackets

WISE, Va. -  The second half comeback for UVa-Wise was not enough in the 89-83 loss to West Virginia State on Thursday at the Prior Center. The Cavaliers outscored the Yellow Jackets 47-43 in the second half in the loss, but could not overcome a 10-point first half deficit.

Cavalier Women Host W. Va. State

Storylines – West Virginia State gameWest Virginia State enters Thursday's game 2-2 in its last four contests.  Both Yellow Jackets' victories came on their home floor, most recently David Smith's squad claimed an 83-73 win over West Virginia Wesleyan.  All but two of State's wins have come on its home floor, the Yellow Jackets are just 2-6 on the road and suffered a 72-58 setback to the Cavaliers earlier this season.  In that game, four State players scored in double digits led by Trina Current's 13 points.  UVa-Wise turned the ball over a season-low four times in the win and made 12 of 14 free throws.  On the season, the Yellow Jackets are led by Shealyn Shafer who leads the team in points at 12.6 per game and rebounds at 8.4 a night.  Shafer scored 10 points and grabbed 11 rebounds in the first meeting between the two schools.

Storylines – West Virginia State gameWest Virginia State is coming off of a 82-11 loss to West Liberty enetering Thursdays game against the UVa-Wise Cavaliers.  In that game, the Hilltoppers had two players finish in double figures. West Liberty was led by Zac Grossenbacher who finished with a game-high 19 points and a team-high 10 rebounds. Seger Bonifant assisted Grossenbacher finishing with16 points., while Devin Hoehn, Joe Lococo and Brady Arnold each added nine points.  The Hilltoppers shot 54.3 percent from the floor and 46.4 percent from beyond the arc against Mountain Lions.  On the season, Seger Bonifant is scoring 25.1 points per game and pulling down 4.3 rebounds a game, while CJ Hester is finishing with 15.5  points and 8.6 rebounds per game.   West Liberty is scoring a league-high104.4 points per game.

Football Announces 14 Initial Signees

WISE - - Head Coach Dewey Lusk and his staff announced the signing of 14 initial signees for the 2015 football season.  The group includes three quarterbacks, including a NCAA Division I mid-year transfer from Arizona State University, three wide receivers, two tight ends, two defensive backs, two defensive tackles, a tailback, and a linebacker.

Women's Lacrosse Picked Fourth in Preseason Poll

BRIDGEPORT, W.Va. –   UVa-Wise has been picked to finish fourth in the inaugural women's lacrosse poll. Led by coach Meghan Dennehy, the first-year program will play its first ever varsity contest on February 25 when the team visits Tusculum.

No. 10 West Liberty Runs By UVa-Wise

WEST LIBERTY, W.Va. - - No. 10 West Liberty shot 52.4 percent from the floor and never trailed in a 103-84 win over UVa-Wise at the ASRC Saturday.  The win completed a season series sweep for the Hilltoppers.

Cavalier Women Come up Short at West Liberty

WEST LIBERTY, W.Va. - -  West Liberty outscored visiting UVa-Wise 48-34 in the second half of Saturday's Mountain East Conference contest to score an 81-79 win at the ASRC.    The Hilltoppers Kailee Howe scored 23 of her game-high 29 points in the final 20 minutes, including 12 in the final six minutes of play to complete the comeback.

Cavalier Softball Opens Season On Saturday

WISE, Va. – Defending Mountain East Conference Tournament Champion UVa-Wise will begin its 2015 season on Saturday when the team visits Limestone College for a non-conference doubleheader.  Coach Karen Bitter's Highland Cavaliers were picked to finish second in the MEC Preseason Poll, one spot behind defending regular season champion West Virginia Wesleyan.

At 13-4 in the Mountain East Conference, West Liberty enters Saturday's game against UVa-Wise in a four-way tie for the league lead.  Four Hilltoppers are averaging in double figures, led by Liz Flowers' 21.5 point per game output.  As a team, West Liberty is scoring a league-high 83.5 points per game and handing out a league-best 19.4 assists per game.

Hot Shooting Cardinals Too Much for Cavaliers

WHEELING, W.Va. - - Jaila Bryant finished the game 10-13 from the field en route to a game-high 22 points as Wheeling Jesuit scored an 85-56 Mountain East Conference victory at the McDonough Center.  Bryant's strong shooting performance bolstered a 63.6 shooting performance for the victorious Cardinals that included a 10-16 showing from beyond the 3-point line.
