Meet the Cavaliers Set for Saturday

WISE – The UVa-Wise Athletic Department invites faculty, staff, students, alumni and other fans to meet and talk with student athletes and coaches during this academic year's second "Meet the Highland Cavalier" event following the men's and women's basketball games on Saturday, January 17 in the Prior Convocation Center at approximately 6 p.m.

STORYLINES – FAIRMONT STATE UNIVERSITY GAMEThe Fighting Falcons enter the contest 8-6 overall and 5-3 in the Mountain East Conference. Fairmont State is led by junior Jamel Morris who is scoring 18.0 points per game and grabbing 4.4 rebounds per game. Most recently, the Fighting Falcons came up a little short in a 94-91 loss to Concord University on Saturday. In that contest, Morris led the way for the Fighting Falcons as he went eight for eight from the free throw line and connected on five 3-pointers to score a game-high 29 points while senior Chase Morgan added 21 points.Senior Nick Harney also assisted the pair with 19 points and four rebounds. As a team, Fairmont State is making 7.8 3-pointers a game and grabbing 34.1 rebounds per game. Overall, the Fighting Falcons are scoring 80.7 points a night while allowing 78.4 points.

Cavalier Women Host Fairmont State on Monday

Coach Steve McDonald's Fairmont State squad has three players averaging over 15 points per game, led by Emily Lohr's 16.1 points per game.  Lohr's 16.1 points a night ranks fifth in the Mountain East Conference.  As a team, the Falcons have been getting done on both ends of the floor.  Fairmont State ranks third in the league in scoring offense at 77.1 points per game while ranking second in scoring defense at 62 points a contest.  The Falcons have won six consecutive games entering Monday's game at UVa-Wise, including a 74-55 win at Concord University Saturday afternoon.

WISE - - Visiting Shepherd University held UVa-Wise scoreless for over six minutes in the second half to post a 71-55 Mountain East Conference victory at the Prior Center Saturday afternoon.

STORYLINES – SHEPHERD UNIVERSITY GAMEThe Rams enter the contest 9-4 overall and 4-3 in the Mountain East Conference. Shepherd is led by senior Morgan McDonald who is scoring 18.4 points per game and grabbing 6.6 rebounds per game. Most recently, the Rams came up a little short in a 102-83 loss to West Liberty University on Thursday. In that contest, West Liberty was able to hold McDonald to seven points and three rebounds. Steffen Davis led the way for the Rams, he went two for two from the free throw line and connected on two 3-pointers to score a team-high 18 points while Skyler Roman added 16 points.Freshman Gavin McTavish also assisted the pair with seven points and six rebounds. As a team, Shepherd is making 7.2 3-pointers a game and grabbing 34.4 rebounds per game. Overall, the Rams are scoring 82.2 points a night while allowing 80.2 points.

Cavalier Women Look for Back-to-Back MEC Wins on Saturday

Storylines – Shepherd University GameShepherd enters coming off its first Mountain East Conference loss of the season, a 90-87 setback at West Liberty on Thursday.  The loss dropped the Rams into a tie for first place in the MEC with the Hilltoppers.  With nine wins already, Shepherd has already surpassed its win total from a year ago by five.  The turnaround has come under first-year coach Jenna Eckleberry who has her team sharing the basketball.  The Rams are averaging 13.92 assists per game while scoring 72.9 points per night.  The team uses a balanced scoring attack as five players are averaging over 10 points per game.  Morgan Arden leads the offensive charge, scoring 12.8 points a night.  Saturday's game will come less than 48 hours after the Rams played the Hilltoppers 350 miles away from Wise.

STORYLINES – WEST VIRGINIA STATE UNIVERSITY GAMEThe Yellow Jackets enter the contest 1-12 overall and 1-3 in the Mountain East Conference. West Virginia State is led by junior Dominic Phillips who is scoring 16.4 points per game and grabbing 4.9 rebounds per game. Most recently, the Yellow Jackets came up a little short in a 65-63 loss to West Virginia Wesleyan College on Monday. In that contest, Markee Mazyck connected on six free throws and three 3-pointers to score a team-high 21 points while Phillips added 18 points, five assists and four steals. Senior Damion Harris also assisted the pair with five points and five rebounds. As a team, West Virginia State is making 5.8 3-pointers a game and grabbing 40.4 rebounds per game. Overall, the Yellow Jackets are scoring 70.2 points a night while allowing 79.2 points.

Storylines – West Virginia State GameThe Yellow Jackets enter the contest coming off of back-to-back Mountain East Confernce wins. Most recently, West Virginia State posted a 51-45 road victory over West Virginia Wesleyan.  Shealyn Shafer leads the attack for the Yellow Jackets as she is averaging a team-high 12.7 points a night while also grabbing 7.3 rebounds a contest.  As a team, West Virginia State relies heavily on its defense.  The Yellow Jackets are limiting opponents to 36.8 percent shooting and 62.4 points per game.

Zack Blair Named First-Team All-State

WISE - - Sophomore linebacker Zack Blair has been named to the Virginia Sports Information Directors Association All-State Team.  A first-team honoree, Blair tied the single-season school record for tackles for loss with 26.5, the number lead the Mountain East Conference and his 95 total tackles were a team-high.

Cavalier Men Host #1 Ranked West Liberty

Storylines - West Liberty GameThe natinoally ranked number one Hilltoppers enter the contest 10-0 overall and 5-0 in the Mountain East Conference. West Liberty is led by junior Seger Bonifant who is scoring 27.5 points per game and grabbing 4.4 rebounds per game. Most recently, the Hilltoppers ran away with an 113-107 overtime victory over Concord University on Saturday. In that contest, Bonifant connected on nine free throws and three 3-pointers to score a game-high 30 points while CJ Hester added 27 points and 12 rebounds. Sophomore Brandon Smith also assisted the pair with 14 points and five rebounds. As a team, West Liberty University is making 12.9, 3-pointers a game and 19.2 free throws per game. Overall, the Hilltoppers are scoring 107.7 points a night while allowing 85.1 points.

Cavalier Women Host West Liberty on Monday

Storylines – West Liberty GameWest Liberty enters the game one game out of first place in the Moutnain East Conference and coming off its finest peformance of the season.  On Saturday, the Hilltoppers rolled to a 90-65 win at Concord behind a 30-point scoring performance by Liz Flowers.  West Liberty shot 49.2 percent from the floor in the win while making 12 shots from beyond the three-point line.  The 'Toppers were the preseason favorite to win the MEC and were ranked ninth in nationally in the preseason. Flowers had led the way on offense for West Liberty, as her 24.3 points per game leads the MEC.

WISE, Va. – Wheeling Jesuit shot 47.8 percent from the floor and limited UVa-Wise to 37 percent shooting as they defeated the Cavaliers 76-63 on Saturday at the Prior Center.

Cavalier Women Host Cardinals on Saturday

Storylines – Wheeling Jesuit GameWheeling Jesuit enters one game over the .500 mark at 4-3 but stands 1-2 in MEC play.  Jaila Bryant enters as the leading scorer for Wheeling Jesuit as she averages 15.2 points a contest. The guard has not played since December 16th, having missed the Cardinals' 84-61 win over Ohio Valley on December 20.  As a team, Wheeling Jesuit has three players averaging double figures and leads the league in shooting percentage at 48.8 percent. One area Wheeling Jesuit has struggled in is rebounding, the Cardinals enter last in the league in offensive rebounding at 10 per game while ranking 11th of 12 schools in defensive rebounding at 25 per contest.

Storylines – Wheeling Jesuit GameThe Cardinals enter the contest 5-3 overall and 1-2 in the Mountain East Conference. Wheeling Jesuit  University is led by Eric Siefert who is scoring 20.1 points per game and grabbing 4.0 rebounds per game.  Most recently, the Cardinals ran away with an 87-74 victory over Ohio Valley on Saturday.  In that contest, Siefert connected on five free throws and four 3-pointers to score a game-high 25 points while Kyle Ritz added 16 points and seven rebounds. Junior Tim Goff also assisted the pair with 14 points and 12 rebounds.   As a team, Wheeling Jesuit University is making 7.6 3-pointers a game and 17.4 free throws per game.  Overall, the Cardinals are scoring 84.5 points a night while allowing 78.0 points.
