Where is the Tutor Connection?

Tutoring services are housed in the Academic Support Services office which is located in the same office space with Student Support Services and the Office of the ADA Coordinator on the first floor of Zehmer Hall, next to the Writing Center.


How do I apply to get a tutor?

Students must come by the Academic Support Services office and complete a request from. Student schedules are matched up with tutor schedules that are comparable.


How much does it cost to get a tutor at the Tutor Connection?

Nothing. All services are free to students enrolled either full or part-time at the College. Students who are not enrolled at the College may set up private sessions with tutors employed by the Tutor Connection; however, costs are decided based on the individual tutor. Private sessions do not fall under the jurisdiction of the Tutor Connection or the College.


In what subjects can I receive tutoring?

Tutors are available in almost all disciplines; however, the greatest requests are in mathematics, science, foreign language and English.


How quickly will my request be filled?

The Academic Coordinator attempts to have each request filled within two weeks. It may take longer depending on the availability of tutors and how flexible the student is.


Can I make more than one request?

Yes, students may request tutoring in more than one course.


Can I request a specific tutor?

Students may request a specific tutor; however, the Academic Coordinator makes the final decisions concerning tutoring assignments. Preferences will be taken into consideration, but not guaranteed.


What kind of tutoring is offered?

The Tutor Connection offers group tutoring. Some one-on-one tutoring is available but is not guaranteed. Student Support Services offers one-on-one tutoring for students who are participants in the program.


What are the Tutor Connection office hours?

The Tutor Connection is open 8:00 a.m.-5:00 p.m (evening hours vary).


Is tutoring available in the summer?

Yes, limited tutoring is available during the summer. Summer office hours are 8:00 a.m.-4:30 p.m.


What is my obligation once signed up for a tutor?

Students must abide by the conditions as stated in the Tutor Connection Policy. Violation of this policy may warrant the cancellation of services for the remainder of the semester.


How often can I get tutoring?

Students may request tutoring as often as needed; however, the Tutor Connection does not guarantee such accommodations. The Academic Coordinator will work with students to be as flexible and accommodating as possible.


Does the Tutor Connection offer drop-in tutoring?

Most sessions are set up by appointment only. Students should check with the Academic Coordinator or other staff about drop-in sessions for math and chemistry. These hours vary from semester to semester.


Do faculty tutor?

Currently, all tutoring is provided by peer tutors with the exception of drop-in hours offered by the Academic Coordinator. Faculty do refer students to be tutors and on occasion, are involved in the training of tutors.


What do I do if I cannot make a session?

Tutors should be notified at the earliest possible time about cancelled sessions. Tutors should provide the same courtesy to students. A backup for this communication is to call the  Center at 328-0177 to notify the Tutor Connection staff. If a student misses three consecutive sessions without prior notice, he/she will be dropped immediately and will have to meet with the Academic Coordinator to have services reinstated.


Can tutoring be conducted outside of the Tutor Connection?
All tutoring should occur in the Center or Zehmer lounge unless the Academic Coordinator gives prior consent to meet elsewhere.


How are tutors selected?

Tutors must be at least sophomores with an overall GPA of 3.0, at least a B-average in the course to be tutored and be recommended by faculty members. Exceptions are made on a case-by-case basis. Tutors should also be model students who have good communication and organizational skills.


Are tutors paid?

Yes, tutors initially earn $6.00 per hour, but are eligible for yearly wage increases based on performance. Tutors are evaluated by both students and staff.
