The Referral Process

What is a referral?

To make a referral is to direct a student to someone who may be able further assist the student. As a tutor, you may discover that you do not have enough experience or knowledge in a particular area to effectively tutor someone or you may have a personality conflict with a student. In these situations, it is a good idea to refer the student to another tutor.

How do I make a referral?

When you realize that a referral is the best course of action for the student, talk with the Adademic Coordinator to discuss the nature of the problem. Then, tell the student. Help him or her to understand that you are not breaking off the relationship, but simply are acting in the student's best interest. You also may want to help the student make the transition from working with you to working with someone else. Occasionally, students do get attached, and you do not want it to appear as if you are "deserting" the student.

When do I make a referral?

Use your best judgement. Sometimes it is just a matter of giving the situation additional time; however, the need for referral may be obvious. A student who talks of suicide, drug abuse, or anything else of that nature should be referred immediately. In such cases, inform the Academic Coordinator so that a referral to a trained professional can be made.

Once I make a referral, do I cease contact with the person?

You should always follow up on a referral by telephone, e-mail, or personal contact. The Academic Coordinator may share some information with you about the progress of the student, but do not expect it. The important thing is that the channels of communication are open after the referral is made.

To whom do I make the referral?

Speak with the Academic Coordinator for assistance. He or she will assist you in making the appropriate decision concerning a referral.
