Grant renewed for UVa-Wise Upward Bound program
The grant to fund Upward Bound at The University of Virginia’s College at Wise has been renewed for an additional four years.
Upward Bound is a pre-college granted program sponsored by the U.S. Department of Education that serves students of Clintwood, Coeburn, Ervinton, J.J. Kelly and Pound high schools who will be first-generation college students or who come from a low-income background. The program’s goal is to prepare these students to be successful not only in their high school classes, but also in their post-secondary endeavors.
“We are very pleased to receive the grant renewal for the Upward Bound Program at UVa-Wise,” said program director Teresa Adkins. “Our college-bound rates among graduating high school seniors remain at over 90 percent, and of those students, approximately 50 percent will graduate from college within six years.”
For more than 40 years, Upward Bound has served local high school students by providing tutoring, monthly academic counseling services, college visits, senior retreats, SAT/ACT preparation, dual enrollment opportunities and a six-week summer academic program.
