THTR 100: Acting (3)
An acting workshop in realistic theatre emphasizing practical application
through classroom exercises.
THTR 101: Introduction to Theatre (3)
An introduction to the craft and art of theatre including acting, directing,
management, design, theatre history, and dramatic literature.
THTR 200: Intermediate Acting (3)
Prerequisite: THTR 100 or permission of instructor
A studio course continuing the development of acting skills first introduced in THTR 100. Vocal, movement, and character development
skills will be stressed. A final performance is required as a capstone
experience for the course.
THTR 201: Voice and Diction (3)
Prerequisite: THTR 100 or permission of instructor
This course will explore the basic principles of vocal production as they
relate to theatre and music theatre. Emphasis is placed on the mechanics
of breathing, projection, resonance, vowel placement, vibrato, and
development of range, as well as interpretation of text and other areas.
THTR 202: Stagecraft and Basic Design (3)
Prerequisite: THTR 250
A hands-on course in technical theatre including basic set construction,
tool operation and safety, lighting instrumentation and technique, and
sound engineering. The course is designed to give students the necessary
understanding of and ability to use the tools required in technical theatre.
THTR 250: Production (2)
A course for all students. Credit may be earned by engaging in a wide
variety of supervised production activities including set construction,
stage lighting, sound design, theatre management, costuming, make-up,
and acting. Students are required to participate for a minimum of four
hours each week (60 hours per semester) for credit. May be repeated for credit.
THTR 266: Theater History I (3)
A survey of the history of theater from ancient Greece to the French neoclassical
period.
THTR 267: Theater History II (3)
A survey of the history of theater from Restoration England to the
present.
THTR 276/476: Western Drama I (3)
Prerequisites: ENGL 101 and 102
An examination of Western thought through the study of plays
representing the major aesthetic, social, and political movements from
the Greeks through the 19th century. Students seeking upper-level credit
will be assigned additional readings and/or projects.
THTR 277/477: Western Drama II (3)
Prerequisites: ENGL 101 and 102
An examination of Western thought through the study of plays
representing major aesthetic, social, and political movements during the
20th century. Students seeking upper-level credit will be assigned
additional readings and/or projects.
THTR 300: Playwriting (3)
Prerequisites: THTR 100 or THTR 101 or permission of instructor
A creative writing course, focusing on plays, dramatic structure and technique. Students will share their written work in class, learning
through in-class critiques of each others’ works, as guided by the
instructor. Students may choose between writing a complete play, writing a series of play-focused exercises, or a combination of the two.
THTR 301: Contemporary Performance (3)
Prerequisite: THTR 100 or 101
A performance workshop (acting and directing) focusing on non-realistic
theatre and contemporary trends in performance. May be repeated for
credit.
THTR 321: Directing (3)
Prerequisite: THTR 100 or 101
Methods and techniques of directing (casting, rehearsing, and producing)
realistic dramatic literature.
THTR 351: Television Production (3)
Prerequisite: THTR 250 or permission of instructor
Introduction to film and video production. History of film and video
production, equipment, production techniques (script writing, location,
personnel, rehearsing, etc.), and post-production techniques (editing,
audio enhancement, etc.). (Dual listing with ENCO 351)
THTR 385, 386, 485, 486: Theatre Seminar I-IV (3 hours per seminar)
Prerequisites: Junior/Senior standing and permission of instructor
Individualized special topics courses for junior/senior theatre majors.
Students will design each course in conjunction with the instructor.
Projects will be geared to the student’s specific interests. Students will
concentrate on the following areas: 1)technical theatre and design; 2)
acting; 3) directing; 4) playwriting; or 5) history and criticism.
