UVa-Wise students Jonathan McQueen and Hannah Barker are this year’s recipients of the David Tipton Memorial Scholarship. The scholarship was established in honor of David Tipton, who served as a band director in the U.S. Army and as band director at Pennington Gap High, Thomas Walker High, Powell Valley High and J.I. Burton High.

McQueen, a native of Big Stone Gap, is a music education major. He performs with the Marching Highland Cavaliers, Jazz Ensemble, Pep Band, Saxophone Ensemble, Wind Ensemble, Highland Chorale, Highland Winds and the Jazz Combo. He has received the John Philip Sousa award in 2014. Post graduation, he plans to attend graduate school in music education.

Hannah Barker, a native of Saltville, is a music education major. She received the John Philip Sousa award her senior year of high school. She is a member of Highland Winds, Wind Ensemble, Jazz Ensemble, and Wise Guys as well as the Pep Band and the Marching

Highland Cavaliers. Upon graduation, she aspires to be a band director.

The students will join the Wise Jazz Ensemble as the group presents its second and final concert of the Spring 2017 semester in the Black Box Theater of the Gilliam Center for the Arts on Monday, April 24 at 7:30 p.m. This concert will include many jazz standards including “Little Brown Jug,” “Pennsylvania 6-5000,” “It Don’t Mean a Thing,” and “Sing, Sing, Sing.” The program will feature soloists Morgen Newell, Kelly Sorah, and Ron Flanary among others. Admission is free.
