The University of Virginia will open a new clinic on Friday, Aug. 17, at UVa-Wise to provide students, staff and faculty with improved primary health care on campus.
The UVA Student and Employee Health Wise Clinic, located in Cantrell Hall, is staffed by a nurse practitioner and will include telehealth care access to physicians at the University of Virginia Medical Center. The nurse practitioner and a full-time nurse will have oversight from a UVA physician via telemedicine.
In addition, the clinic would allow UVa-Wise nursing students another opportunity for clinical observation experience. The telemedicine system will provide access to UVA specialists. The plan will also offer additional internships in telemedicine for computer science students.
Funding for the clinic, which totaled about $273,000, came from UVA. The facility will also generate revenue and will accept the College’s employee health care insurance. There will be no copay.
Chancellor Donna P. Henry said the clinic will give employees and students convenient access to health care, and will allow the University to offer more of its wellness programs to the College at Wise. The grand opening is set for 1 p.m. Tours of the clinic will be given as part of the grand opening.
