The 23rd Annual Martin Luther King, Jr. Remembrance March, presented by The University of Virginia’s College at Wise Black History Committee, will be held on Monday, January 21, 2019.
The evening begins with a free community dinner at Wise Baptist Church at 5:30 p.m. At 6:30 p.m. the community is invited to participate in a candlelight march starting at the Wise Baptist Church through Main Street and commencing at The First Church of God. (Free shuttle will also be provided for those not wishing to walk.) The Program will begin at 7:00 p.m.
Guest Speaker is Rev. Sandra L. Jones. Rev. Jones was born and raised in Big Stone Gap, Virginia where she currently lives, and has served as Pastor during her 22 years of ministry in circuit ministry which includes her home church Williams Chapel African Methodist Episcopal Zion Church in Big Stone Gap, Va., Blackman Chapel A.M.E. Zion Church in Norton, and Goode Temple A.M.E. Zion Church in Lynch, Ky.
Performances will include Souls Journey, which is a seven-member Christian band from Southwest Virginia. The group has just released its fourth recording project entitled “Love Songs to Jesus”. The band has been together for over 12 years and has played a wide variety of venues. Their music covers various musical styles including the Motown sound, modern contemporary Christian, old school black gospel, and even a hint of blues. Most of their songs are original compositions.
