Sheyann Webb-Christburg, dubbed the Smallest Freedom Fighter by Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., will speak at the University of Virginia’s College at Wise as the College celebrates February’s Black History Month.

The lecture is the first of several set for February, and the series is sponsored by the UVA Wise Office of Compliance & Inclusion and the Black History Month Committee. Webb-Christburg will lecture on Feb. 3, 2020, at 1 p.m. in the Cantrell Banquet Hall.

“We are excited to welcome Webb-Christburg to campus as we kickoff Black History Month with a strong lecture series,” said Tabitha Smith, director of the Office of Compliance & Inclusion. “She has a powerful story to tell, and we know her experience as she marched with Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. will resonate with the audience. We look forward to hosting her at Wise.”

Born in Selma, Alabama, Webb-Christburg grew up in a family of eight children of the late John and Betty Webb. She would sneak away from home to attend mass meetings during the height of segregation battles. She was the youngest participant in the first attempted Selma to Montgomery march known as “Bloody Sunday.” She also participated in the “Turn Around Tuesday March” and the successful march from Selma to Montgomery.

A voice for justice, equality and self-achievement, Webb-Christburg is a humanitarian, civil rights activist, mentor and youth advocate. She is co-author of “Selma, Lord, Selma: Girlhood Memories of the Civil Rights Days.”

Because of her numerous encounters with racism and poverty, Webb-Christburg has dedicated her life to helping youngsters to build self-esteem, gain confidence, overcome adversity and find real purpose in their lives.

She founded KEEP Productions, a non-profit youth development and mentoring program designed for youth ages three through 18 to enhance their personal growth by building self-esteem in order to become strong leaders.
