UVA Wise announced has joined the ALL IN Campus Democracy Challenge. The Challenge is a national, nonpartisan program that supports and recognizes colleges and universities for their commitment to helping students form the habits of active and informed citizenship and making democratic participation a core value on their campuses.
“By our college campus taking part in the ALL IN Campus Democracy Challenge, we are placing a priority on civic education and engagement,” said Heather Evans, professor of political science at UVA Wise. “One of the most powerful tools our students have at their disposal to effect change in their communities is the vote.“
Participating campuses focus on institutionalizing efforts to foster student civic learning, political engagement, and voter participation. Along with the hundreds of other campuses that have joined the Challenge, UVA Wise is cultivating the next generation of informed and engaged citizens who are essential to a healthy democracy.
“Preparing students with the knowledge, skills, and experiences needed for their public lives as contributing members of our democracy and their professions has historically been a responsibility of higher education,” said Jennifer Domagal-Goldman, Ph.D., executive director of the ALL IN Challenge. “We are thrilled to welcome UVA Wise to the Challenge and applaud its commitment to making informed engagement in our democracy a meaningful and pervasive part of campus culture.”
By joining the Challenge, UVA Wise has committed to convening a campus-wide committee to develop and implement an action plan that describes the institution’s commitment to and strategy for advancing nonpartisan democratic engagement through civic learning, political engagement, and increased voter participation. UVA Wise will share its student voting rates from its National Study of Learning, Voting, and Engagement (NSLVE) campus report in order to earn a national seal and be eligible for awards.
UVA Wise received the Silver Campus award because of an increase in student engagement since 2018.
The ALL IN Campus Democracy Challenge benefits from the support and insight of a national advisory board and works in partnership with organizations such as AASCU’s American Democracy Project, Campus Compact, NASPA – Student Affairs Professionals in Higher Education, the Students Learn Students Vote Coalition, and others to advance the shared goal of informed and increased participation in our nation’s democracy.
