Majors & Minors
The UVa-Wise Education Department offers students a choice of two majors:
BACHELOR OF ARTS IN HEALTH AND PHYSICAL EDUCATION
The major is designed for students seeking a career in health and physical education. Students will choose between the concentration in sports management or teacher licensure. The teaching licensure concentration is designed for students to apply for a teaching endorsement in health and physical education at the PK-12 levels. The sports management concentration is designed for students interested in a career working with athletes, financial, corporate, management, leadership, and the business side of the sports world.
BACHELOR OF ARTS IN LIBERAL ARTS AND SCIENCES
The major is designed for students seeking teaching endorsements at the PK–12 levels. Students will choose between the Elementary PK-6 track and/or the Special Education K-12 track. Students will also choose one concentration area selected from English, Science, History, or Mathematics.
Students who are seeking a teaching endorsement at the secondary level will major in their respective discipline and add an education minor. (see Minor page)
The UVa-Wise Education Department offers students a choice of two minors. Students who are seeking a teaching endorsement at the 6-12 level will choose a minor in secondary education. Students who are seeking a non-teaching minor in library media will choose the library media minor. (A teaching endorsement in library media is available, see Library Media page for more information)
SECONDARY EDUCATION MINOR
A secondary education minor is for students who major in English, Mathematics, History, Biology, Chemistry, Foreign Language, Accounting, Business Administration, Economics, Music, or Theatre and would like to teach at the secondary 6-12 level. Students will major in their selected discipline and minor in secondary education.
LIBRARY MEDIA MINOR
Students can receive a minor in library media by taking the required 18 credit hours. The minor is not for students seeking a teaching endorsement in library media. For more information about the library media program, see Library Media page.
