Learning Opportunities

Students studying in the MCS department at UVA Wise have conducted internships at well-known companies and organizations like Atomicorp, Northrop Grumman, CGI, Booze Allen, and the Virginia Department of Mines, Minerals and Energy. Many employers with a relationship with UVA Wise hire our sophomore students as interns and keep them throughout their undergraduate career.

Career Discovery and Planning’s Wise Works program, which allows employers to cost share your internship with the College, means UVA Wise often helps students obtain paid internships related to their fields of study. The program is made possible through funding from UVA’s Strategic Initiative Fund and the UVA Wise Office of Economic Development and Strategic Initiatives.

Use the thrill of competition to learn marketable skills. At UVA Wise, you can compete in national cybersecurity tournaments every year. Our students also participate in offerings from the national organization Security BSides, at whose conferences you will hear from speakers in the industry and compete in the capture-the-flag competition.

Studying in the MCS department allows you to join a national network of scholars and job opportunities, which can be found across the U.S. Numerous UVA Wise graduates from our department are teleworking from places around the globe that they love, including urban, rural, and remote locations!

Study abroad at a variety of locations around the world. The University of South Wales is a popular option for students interested in MCS.

Ada Lovelace was the first programmer. In her honor, several UVA Wise students created The Lovelace Society. Anyone can join this group which creates awareness for and conducts outreach in the name of women participating in technology careers.
