Why UVa-Wise?
I loved the college when I was a student here and I love it even more now as an instructor.  I enjoy having smaller classes and knowing my students names. I like that fact that most students feel comfortable coming to my office for help. Many of my former students add me on Facebook. I love keeping up with them, seeing their pictures, and celebrating their successes with them!

Advice to Students
Well, of course, they must attend their classes to be successful! I also encourage students to ask questions, to be inquisitive. Sometimes making a mistake is not a terrible thing. You learn from your mistakes and this will help you learn and grow. When students are trying to choose a major, I stress the importance of loving what you do. Many students initially try to choose a major based on the amount of money he or she will make. And, money is definitely important. But, life is short, and I think you need to enjoy what you do on a daily basis.

Interesting Facts
I am married and have two children. My kids have been involved in a lot of different activities, including volleyball, basketball, football, soccer, and wrestling. So, I’ve spent much of time over the years watching them compete. I loved every minute of it! When I’m not working or attending a sporting event, I really enjoy travelling. I always say that I was meant to be extremely wealthy so I could spend my time travelling the world-I’m not sure what happened!

Background
I worked in public accounting before coming to the college. I enjoyed that very much. I always encourage my accounting majors to work in public accounting at least for a few years. They will gain valuable experience! I maintain a CPA license in Virginia, which means I am required to attend continuing education seminars or courses-around 40 hours each year! This is time consuming, but it’s important to keep up to date. The tax laws are constantly changing.

Favorite Course to Teach
Federal Taxation. I enjoy the subject, but I especially enjoy working with my senior accounting students.

Awards and Recognitions
I’ve been honored to receive the Harrison Award for Outstanding Teaching and the Harrison Award for Outstanding Advising. Dana Kilgore and I were excited to be featured in the UVa-Wise magazine, including a cover photo.
