Welcome to Wise...we're ready for you!

Orientation Overview

Orientation is a special event for new admitted students who have paid their enrollment deposit and will enter UVA Wise in Summer and Fall 2020:

  • freshmen – deposited students who are (or will be) recent high school graduates.  These students may also have dual-enrollment credit courses, but they have not attended another college/university otherwise.
  • transfers – deposited students who have attended and have coursework from another college or university since graduating from high school.

During Orientation, you will begin your transition to UVA Wise, learning more about campus resources, gaining knowledge of academic expectations and requirements, and registering for your first UVA Wise classes with your faculty advisor.

Out of an abundance of caution, all summer Orientation 2020 sessions will be online, which means there are no longer any actual orientation “dates.”  Upon receipt of the Virtual Orientation directions beginning in late June, you will complete the requirements at your own pace.  See your specific Virtual Orientation section — freshman or transfer — below for additional details.

**NOTE:  If you had already registered for a previous in-person Orientation date, please do NOT re-register.  Your registration is automatically moved to Virtual Orientation.**

Freshman Virtual Orientation – opens June 26

Freshman Virtual Orientation is for those deposited students who are (or will be) recent high school graduates.  These students may also have dual-enrollment credit courses, but they have not attended another college/university otherwise.  Students, please follow these steps to complete Virtual Orientation:

UVA Wise Email – check your personal email for IT info to setup your new UVA Wise email. After setup, Cavs check their email regularly for important notices and also use it for access to systems, applications & forms (including Orientation registration).

Registering for Orientation – AFTER you have paid your enrollment deposit, check your PERSONAL EMAIL for the Orientation INVITATION LINK & use your UVA WISE EMAIL to register in the my.uvawise portal (you DO have access to login with your UVA Wise email). There is a $50 non-refundable registration fee for Freshman Orientation (if you are eligible for a waiver based upon your FAFSA submission, the waiver code automatically populates in the form).

All College communications will now begin going to your UVA Wise email, starting with the Orientation registration confirmation, so please check it regularly.

  • Step 1 – Orientation Module – All students registered for Orientation will receive email directions to their UVA Wise email (within 24 hours or next business day of registration) for completing the UVA Wise Orientation module where they will learn all about being a UVA Wise Cav.
  • Step 2 – Math Assessment Module – An initial math placement for all new students is based upon the SAT/ACT math score and is available in the Student Life tab of the my.uvawise portal.  An Orientation math assessment is:
    • REQUIRED for all students planning to major in the Natural Sciences (including pre-professional areas, excluding pre-law) or Mathematics & Computer Science   (even if you have transferable credit).
    • OPTIONAL for students in all other majors, and is available if students are not satisfied with the initial math placement.
  • Step 3 – Select an Appointment – AFTER completing Step 1 (and Step 2, if required), you will receive an email with details for your assignment to an Advising module where you will select an advising appointment via Zoom or phone with your faculty advisor.
    • Ensure that all final high school AND college transcripts for any dual enrollment courses, as well as AP test scores, have been sent to UVA Wise for course credit evaluation BEFORE the advising appointment date.
    • Virginia residents, be sure that you have returned the Application for In-State Tuition form to the Admissions Office (or ARC residents, be sure that you returned the ARC form to the Admissions Office) BEFORE the advising appointment date, too.
  • Step 4 – Advising & Scheduling – Students will meet virtually with their faculty advisor at their scheduled appointment time to discuss programs of study, the liberal arts core, and schedule their UVA Wise classes for the fall semester.

For your convenience, this infograph provides a printable overview of the steps to Virtual Orientation.

Upon completion of all steps, watch the mail for a special package containing UVA Wise swag just for you to celebrate completion of your UVA Wise Virtual Orientation!

A Q&A Webinar will be available AFTER completion of Virtual Orientation for students and parents/family on these dates — July 17 & July 27.  Sign-up details will be shared in the Virtual Orientation completion email sent to all students’ UVA Wise email.
