The students of The University of Virginia’s College at Wise’s Department of Visual & Performing Arts in collaboration with community members are sponsoring a fundraiser for its Theater students to attend the 2019 Southeastern Theater Conference in Knoxville, TN. The fundraiser’s family-friendly performances will include a contemporary look at Clement Clarke Moore’s ‘Twas the Night Before Christmas, musical performances by UVa-Wise Music students, and a community theater production of Dave Wagner’s Behind the Christmas Pageant.
Everyone knows the story behind the birth of Jesus. Or do they? Children usually know more than parents think but sometimes they miss pieces of the puzzle. Behind the Christmas Pageant presents a comedic look behind the scenes of a Christmas pageant dress rehearsal. The children discover that many of them do not in fact know or understand the story of Jesus’ birth. They put their heads together during their off-stage time and enter into an impromptu reenactment of the story using their imagination and improvising. This family-friendly production puts the holiday season into perspective, fostering unity, humility, and revelation.
The fundraiser is scheduled for Saturday, December 8 with performances at 2 p.m. and 6 p.m. and on Sunday, December 9 at 3 p.m. in the Gilliam Center for the Arts Black Box Theater. Tickets are $5 for adults. Children 12 and under will be admitted free. Tickets may be purchased at the door.
The Southeastern Theater Conference provides opportunities for theater students across the U.S. to gain knowledge and build skills through the variety of seminars and presentations offered. The conference also hosts graduate school recruitment, job fairs, and professional auditions which enable students to network and make professional connections.
