Diversity

Diversity

The campus community at UVa-Wise is representative of a variety of cultures and ethnicities.  As a community of learners, we seek to appreciate and respect the diverse cultures and backgrounds, including geographic, socioeconomic, sexual orientation, and religion, of our students, faculty and staff.

uvawise_diversityA diverse setting assists students in gaining an understanding of the value of education and the responsibility of citizenship which is critical to their successful acclimation in an ever-changing and complex world.

There are a variety of departments and initiatives at UVa-Wise that serve to further promote diversity education.  Read below to learn more and for contact information should you have additional questions.

Disability Support Services
Disability Support Services at UVa-Wise works to assist all qualified students with disabilities in the pursuit of their educational objectives. We attempt to coordinate the students’ needs with services and resources available within our college system, and to ensure accessible educational opportunities for students according to their individual needs.  Our philosophy is that the individuals we serve are students first, and their disabilities are secondary. For more information about Disability Support Services visit the Disability Support Services webpage or contact Whitney Wells, ADA Coordinator, at 276.376.0177.

International Studies
The Office of International Studies at UVa-Wise serves as the focal point for the development, supervision, and coordination of all international programs, activities, and services. Our goal is to promote better understanding of international issues by disseminating information on international opportunities, promoting courses abroad, providing support to international students on campus and developing an international outlook among students and staff.  For more information, visit our  Office of International Studies website or contact Witold Wolny, Field Director, at 276.328.0287 or internationalprograms@uvawise.edu.

LGBTA
A student organization representing lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgendered, questioning/queer, and allied students, staff and faculty of The University of Virginia’s College at Wise. We promote and advocate for acceptance of and protection for sexual minority students, as well as for gay rights in general. Membership will remain confidential. Contact faculty advisor Angie Harvey at 276.328.0159 for more information.

Multicultural Affairs
Students from a variety of cultures add welcomed diversity to the campus of UVa-Wise. Students have opportunities for leadership development, academic and personal growth, added awareness of their own cultural histories, and the experience of enriching the knowledge of cultural and ethnic diversity to all. The Multi-Cultural Alliance (MCA) student organization is open to all students and offers the chance to share knowledge of cultures and traditions with the entire campus community.  Trips, dinners and other campus events are only part of MCA’s agenda for enriching the UVa-Wise campus environment. For more information, visit the Multi-Cultural Affairs website or contact advisor Witold Wolny at 276.328.0287.
