Events

The Student Government Association coordinates and/or sponsors a number of campus and community service events. For more information about any of the events listed below, please see an SGA member, call the SGA President at 276.376.3438, or contact Advisor Josh Justice at 276.376.4517.

Homecoming

Homecoming events include the tradition to recognize the outstanding spirit of UVa-Wise clubs & organizations.

  • The Silver Saber Spirit Competition is conducted on a point system awarded to the top-spirited/best performing organization for each of the many scheduled events.  The winning organization will receive a Silver Saber Spirit trophy, addition of the organization name to the Silver Saber winners’ plaque and a $700 prize (sponsored by the SGA and the Alumni Association).
  • One of the most-cherished UVa-Wise traditions, introduction of the Homecoming Court and announcement of the Homecoming Queen and King will be conducted at half-time of the Cavs football contest.  Online nominations and elections are held in the weeks preceding Homecoming weekend.

Lighting of Crockett Hall

Each November/December, the SGA coordinates the holiday lighting of Crockett Hall.  Festivities include a brief program followed by hot chocolate and other refreshments.

Cavapalooza

Cavapalooza brings a carnival atmosphere to campus with a Ferris wheel, rides, funnel cakes, food trucks, beverage garden, games, music, and more each year in April. Hosted in partnership with the Student Activities Board, Intramural Sports, and Office of the Chancellor.

International Week

International Weeks are hosted in the Fall and Spring semesters to recognize and represent the home countries of UVa-Wise international students.

Commuter Week

Commuter Week event(s) are hosted in the Fall and Spring semesters to show appreciation for commuter students.

Office Hours

Members of each of the SGA Branches have weekly office hours to provide members of the student body an opportunity to share their thoughts and concerns about campus issues. The Student Government Association is located in the Student Leadership Wing on the third floor of the C. Bascom Slemp Student Center. The office telephone number is 276-328-0213.

Weekly Meetings

All students enrolled for six or more semester hours at the College are considered members of the Student Government Association during the time of their enrollment.
Weekly meetings are held each Friday at 1 pm in the Dogwood Room on the fifth floor of the C. Bascom Slemp Student Center. All meetings are open to the public.
