Outdoor Recreation Events

Events & Registration

The UVa-Wise Outdoor Recreation program takes advantage of the opportunities afforded by the natural surroundings of Southwest Virginia and the region. The Outdoor Recreation Club provides input for the scheduling of events and trips, and membership is open to all students.

While a variety of events (see below) are scheduled throughout each academic year, Outdoor Rec also has a variety of equipment available for students to check out at no cost and explore the region on their own.  Long day hikes are a popular event. Enjoying the natural beauty of our surroundings at local High Knob, Guest River Gorge and it’s famous Little Stoney Falls, the Breaks Interstate Park, and the Cumberland Falls of Kentucky provide some great exercise, too.  Available equipment for check out includes:  fishing poles and bait, a bicycle, rock climbing gear, and camping gear (tents, sleeping bags, portable camp stove and lanterns).

Outdoor Rec seeks to provide a wide variety of events and trips for UVa-Wise students.  While some events like skydiving and white water rafting have become traditional favorites, other events are added based upon student interest.

Recent and typical fall semester offerings by Outdoor Rec include:

  • white water rafting – camp overnight and enjoy the rapids of West Virginia’s Gauley River, plus the ACE Adventure Resort’s lake activities including water slide, zip line, inflatables, paddle boats, beach volleyball, ATVing, & more!
  • NFL roadtrip
  • paintball – an energetic day-long trip of shooting paintballs upwards of 200 mph while avoiding the ‘enemy’ under the direct supervision of trained officials in a “Woods Course” or the always fast-paced “Speedball Course”
  • kayaking/canoeing – enjoy the relaxing current through the heart of the Appalachian Mountains in Asheville, NC, down the French Broad River with spectacular views of wildlife and the ever-popular Biltmore Estate and its properties
  • horseback riding – an afternoon of horseback riding is a unique experience for many students at Warriors Path State Park
  • caving – Southwest Virginia’s Natural Tunnel State Park and Worley’s Cave in TN offer spelunking at its finest
  • UVa-Wise football road trips – students show support of their own Highland Cavaliers during regular season and/or tournament action

For spring semester, recent and traditional Outdoor Rec events include:

  • NBA roadtrip
  • UVa-Wise basketball roadtrips – students show support of their own Highland Cavaliers during regular season and/or tournament action
  • MLB roadtrip
  • overnight & day skiing, snowboarding & snow tubing – West Virginia’s Winterplace offers a variety of favorite winter activities
  • skydiving – a student favorite that has been hosted at the local Lonesome Pine Regional Airport by Skydive Smoky Mountains, this event offers scenic views of campus at an altitude of 12,000 feet
  • amusement park trip – Carowinds, Six Flags and Dollywood’s Splash Country continue to provide great fun

Outdoor Rec 1

Any current student is eligible to sign up to attend an Outdoor Rec trip.  While there is usually not a fee for smaller trips, some larger and more expensive trips like skydiving and skiing will require a $25-$50 fee.

Participation is limited for some trips and participation is first come, first served. If the number of registrants exceeds the number of allowable participants, attendees are selected via a lottery system.
