Leadership Events & Opportunities

There are numerous leadership events and opportunities for members of the UVa-Wise community.

Many campus offices, including the Office of Student Life, offer paid and non-paid employment and internship opportunities for students to gain valuable leadership, office and teamwork experience.  Some recent examples include  Student Activities & Greek Life interns, Expedition Leaders and an Expedition Leader intern, Resident Advisors, Intramural Supervisors, as well as Slemp Student Center Facility Advisors and Check Desk Assistants. 

Club & Organization membership
More than 50 UVa-Wise clubs and organizations offer opportunities for getting involved on campus, building friendships, and developing leadership and teamwork skills.  Visit the clubs and organization website (at left) for more information about the diverse organizations available and to learn more about establishing a new organization.

Club & Organization Presidents & Advisors Meetings
These mandatory meetings are held at the start of each academic year and provide clubs and organization presidents and advisors the opportunity to register with the Office of Student Activities & Greek Life, receive updates on campus policies and procedures, as well as SGA news and updates.

Student Leadership Awards Banquet

Held each spring, the annual Student Leadership Awards Banquet honors the contributions of student leaders and advisors from clubs and organizations, Expedition, Housing and Residence Life, Multicultural Affairs, Student Government Association, Student Conduct Board, Honor Court, Greek Life, the C. Bascom Slemp Student Center, Student Activities, Intramurals and Outdoor Recreation, and Who’s Who in American Colleges and Universities.

Student Leadership Retreat  [2017 nomination form]
Sponsored by the Office of Student Life and the Student Government Association, the weekend Retreat is held each September and participants enjoy a variety of sessions and workshops focusing on leadership skills development. Students are nominated by club and organization advisors and asked to submit a completed nomination form for consideration.  Priority is given to first-time attendees, freshmen and sophomores. The 20th Annual event, The Leader in You, will be held September 19-21 in Pigeon Forge, TN.

Student Member of the Board

One representative from the UVa-Wise student body serves in a non-voting capacity as a member of the UVa-Wise Board.  This unique leadership opportunity is for a one-year term.  Nominations are solicited from the campus community each spring. A recommendation committee reviews cover letters and resumes and forwards deserving candidate information to the Executive Committee of the UVa-Wise Board for final selection.

Who’s Who Among Students in American Colleges and Universities

Who’s Who Among Students in American Colleges and Universities is a national recognition program that annually honors outstanding junior and senior campus leaders for scholastic and community achievements.  Nominations are solicited from the campus community each fall, and the selection committee reviews submitted forms.  Honorees are recognized at the annual Student Leadership Awards Banquet held each April.

Nominations are now being taken for the 2016-2017 Who’s Who recognition. Please consider nominating a deserving junior or senior student for this special recognition. Criteria for consideration of each nominee includes: high GPA, overall good character, participation and leadership in College and extracurricular activities, leadership ability/potential, and community involvement. Nominees also have the opportunity to be considered for $10,000 in scholarships to be awarded by the Who’s Who organization in May 2017. To complete a nomination, please complete the nomination form, and return to Nathan Rasnake in the Office of Student Leadership (3rd floor of the C. Bascom Slemp Student Center) by noon on Friday, December 2, 2016.
