Although we held a virtual ceremony to begin the celebration of the graduates of the UVA Wise Class of 2020, we plan to hold Commencement 2020 in the David J. Prior Convocation Center on Sunday, October 4, 2020. We may need to consider alternate dates as the pandemic evolves, and a ceremony time will be determined later, but we are committed to celebrating your graduation fully at a future date. At this time, we would advise against making any travel plans until we have a clearer picture of safety measures and necessary precautions in the fall.

Events at the David J. Prior Center are postponed until further notice.
All events of any size on campus are cancelled until at least June 10.

We are suspending all international and non-essential domestic College travel, effective immediately and continuing until further notice.

FAQs for Students

Will there be a Dean’s List for Spring 2020?
The Academic Administration decided there would be no Dean’s List for Spring 2020, because of the decision to give Credit/No credit grades.  In fact, the catalog states specifically that no CR/NC courses may be counted toward the list.

I am a transfer student with questions about what courses will transfer to UVA Wise, how grading for spring 2020 impacts what classes will carry over, and other transfer practices. Who can answer my questions?
A grade of P from a Virginia community college or Richard Bland College will transfer to UVA Wise, provided there is an equivalent or elective course at UVA Wise. It will also satisfy elective, general education, and major coursework as appropriate.

More detailed information about grading and transfer, sending your transcript, the Guaranteed Admission Agreement, registration, orientation, housing, admission, and other critical answers are available on the Transfer FAQ site, which is managed by UVA Wise’s Office of the Registrar.

When can I return to campus to get my belongings?
The Commonwealth of Virginia continues to operate under the Stay at Home order issued by Governor Northam. With that said, this order does allow travel to and from educational institutions. I am in the process of setting up individual appointments for students to pick up their belongings from campus. Student belongings must be picked up from the residence halls no later than Monday, June 15. Please communicate with us to arrange your pick up of belongings—belongings cannot remain in your room until next academic year as maintenance will be doing work in the residence halls to prepare for the upcoming year.

When scheduling an appointment, Housing and Residence Life urges you to not travel to Wise if:

  • You live in an area with a high concentration of COVID 19 cases.
  • You have been or you suspect you have been recently exposed to COVID 19.
  • You have a fever.
  • You are not feeling well.

Once an appointment for your move out has been scheduled, your CAVS Card ID will be programmed to operate the main door to the building you live in from 8am-5pm. You will need to bring your room key and your CAVS Card with you to move out. A confirmation email with directions for checking out of your room will be emailed to you once a date has been scheduled. Please note that overnight stays are not permitted.

Please do not travel to Wise to pick up belongings without an appointment being scheduled or confirmed as you will not be able to access the residence halls.
Please email for more information.

How do I return my books to the Bookstore?
If you are returning to UVA Wise this for the fall 2020 semester, you will have the opportunity to turn your rental textbooks to the Bookstore once the semester starts. Should you have questions about Rental Textbooks, please contact Scott Lawson at and he will be able to assist you.

Can I continue to work as a student employee at my on-campus job?
Student employees who are able to complete their duties remotely can do so with the approval of their supervisor. Students should submit time sheets and will be paid at their normal hourly wage. Students in the Federal Work Study program (FWS) will continue to be paid an average of their current wages bi-weekly through the end of the semester. Students on FWS who will continue to work remotely should submit time sheets and will be paid at their normal hourly wage.

For the safety of students and the others with whom they may come into contact, non-FWS student employees who cannot work remotely will not be eligible to continue working while the College’s operating schedule is modified due to COVID-19. We understand that this will cause some students financial hardship, and we will do whatever we can to help. If you are in need of financial support, please connect with your supervisor who has received a list of emergency financial resources available to displaced student employees.
