FAQs

The College is open and operating.
The University of Virginia’s College at Wise has moved courses online for the remainder of the spring semester to prevent the spread of COVID-19 and keep our students safe.

How is UVA Health and the UVA Health and Wellness for UVA Wise Students and Employees involved in planning and response?
The UVA Wise Health Clinic is open and operating. They are in contact with UVA Health and the local health department. We ask that anyone interested in being seen at the clinic call first (276-376-3475) for initial observation. For those who come to the clinic, you will be provided with a mask and screening prior to being seen.

Has anyone in the UVA Wise community been diagnosed with COVID-19?
At this time, there have been no diagnosed cases in Wise or Wise County.

How is the College keeping students, parents, faculty, and staff informed?
UVA Wise is keeping our COVID-19 page up-to-date with the latest information on the College’s response to this virus. Students, faculty, and staff should also check their campus email regularly.

What is the status of Spring 2020 Commencement?
Commencement, set for May 9, will be postponed until a later date

The remainder of the spring athletic season is cancelled.
The South Atlantic Conference announced on March 12 that they have suspended all athletic related activities. This means that all Spring sports are canceled. Student athletes will be asked to return home.

Events at the David J. Prior Center are postponed until further notice.
All events of any size on campus are cancelled until at least June 10.

Will domestic and international travel be disrupted?
We are suspending all international and non-essential domestic College travel, effective immediately and continuing until further notice.

What will the College do if there is a possible case identified among students, faculty, and staff?
We would immediately contact our local health department who would then take the lead on the case.

The campus bookstore remains open.
Staff will be in the store periodically throughout the week as needed.  You may visit www.uvawisebookstore.com for your purchasing needs, and you may email Scott Lawson at msl6r@uvawise.edu if specific needs arise.  We are actively working with the University of Virginia and Nebraska Book Co to determine how we will manage the return of rental books as well as buy backs.  We will distribute more information when we have it available.

Will dining services continue to be available at UVA Wise during this time?
Students remaining on campus will have access to pick up meals at Smith Dining Commons. There will be no service available for Faculty & Staff.

Can I access gym facilities at UVA Wise at this time?
Greear Gym, the Winston Ely Health & Wellness Center, and Greear Pool are closed until further notice. We know that your wellness is very important, so please check the UVA Wise Wellness Facebook page where Sarah will provide some resources for you while you are away. At this time, we are not currently booking any pool parties.

FAQs for Students

When can I return to campus to get my belongings?
The deadline to retrieve essential belongings and items was 5 p.m. on Friday, March 20. UVA Wise residence halls are now locked down and secured. If you still have items on campus, those items are in your room and locked up. Once the situation with the COVID-19 virus becomes clearer, housing and residence life will notify students, by email, of dates and times for moving out of the residence halls. Please do not travel to campus during the next several weeks to retrieve items as access will not be permitted.

If you have essential items (i.e. textbooks, medicines, etc.), that you need mailed to you, please email wisehousing@uvawise.edu requesting those items be mailed to you. Include in that email what items are to be picked up, where they are located, and the address you wish them to be mailed to.

Since students won’t be residing in residence halls or eating in the cafeteria, will there be any sort of financial adjustment for room and board during this time period?
Due to recent events surrounding COVID-19, and students being asked to remain off campus, housing and dining charges will be prorated and a credit given.  Due to this unique situation, the College had to be careful to make sure providing the appropriate credit did not cause any problems with regulations such as federal financial aid or NCAA compliance, to name a few.

This credit will be used to satisfy any outstanding balance on your student account for the Spring semester.  Any remaining credit will be applied toward a future semester’s charge for housing and dining. If you are a graduating senior, you may request a refund by emailing Amanda Hughes at agh4rg@uvawise.edu no later than April 15th, and please provide the appropriate mailing address for this refund. Refunds will apply to the direct payments made on the account by the student.

Students who resided in McCraray Hall will receive a credit of $2,100.  Students who resided in all other residence halls will receive a $2,400 credit.  If you have any questions regarding this credit, please email finance@uvawise.edu.

Is Smiddy’s Cupboard available during UVA Wise’s Online Learning dates?
Smiddy’s Cupboard, located within the Division of Student Affairs suite in Cantrell, will be open on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. If you come to visit the Cupboard and notice someone inside, please wait in the common area until they are finished so that we are all practicing appropriate social distancing guidelines.

Can I access Career Discovery and Planning resources during UVA Wise’s Online Learning period?
Career Discovery and Planning will continue to serve students by phone, email, videoconference, or Facetime. If you need resume reviews, practice interviews, receive graduate school advice, or other career services, please contact us at careerdiscovery@uvawise.edu or 276-328-0126.

We have cancelled our events, including Dining Etiquette and Mocktail Party, as well as any on-campus recruiting by employers, and are encouraging employers to try recruiting via webinars or videos.

If I, or someone I care about, is experiencing anxiety or in need of counseling services, how can I ensure my needs are met?
The UVA Wise Counseling Center is now available to provide distance counseling for currently enrolled students residing in Virginia. As you manage your new circumstances related to COVID-19, we are here to help you successfully navigate. I have questions about how to make the most of online learning.

Can I continue to work as a student employee at my on-campus job?
Student employees who are able to complete their duties remotely can do so with the approval of their supervisor. Students should submit time sheets and will be paid at their normal hourly wage. Students in the Federal Work Study program (FWS) will continue to be paid an average of their current wages bi-weekly through the end of the semester. Students on FWS who will continue to work remotely should submit time sheets and will be paid at their normal hourly wage.

For the safety of students and the others with whom they may come into contact, non-FWS student employees who cannot work remotely will not be eligible to continue working while the College’s operating schedule is modified due to COVID-19. We understand that this will cause some students financial hardship, and we will do whatever we can to help. If you are in need of financial support, please connect with your supervisor who has received a list of emergency financial resources available to displaced student employees.

How can I receive my mail from the Post Office?
We will be glad to forward your mail to your home address as long as it has been delivered via United States Postal Service (USPS). To have your mail forwarded, please make a request by emailing mail.idservices@uvawise.edu. We cannot forward DHL, FedEx or UPS. Can I access the UVA Wise library during this time?
The Library facility will be closed, except to faculty and staff who need to use it for teaching online classes. However, you can use the “Ask a Librarian” feature on the UVA Wise library website to receive assistance.

FAQs for Faculty and Staff

All faculty and staff who can work remotely should be told to do so.
Telecommuting for all faculty and staff is mandated except for those who must report in person to carry out key functions of their jobs.

I have questions about pay and benefits during the COVID-19 pandemic. Where can I find information and resources?
During this challenging time, the University’s Human Resources COVID-19 website can help you find resources that may be of assistance to you. It includes links to Teladoc and Crisis Care benefits as well as tips for both employees and managers regarding working from home.

The College has moved all classes online to ensure the safety of our students, faculty, and staff.

Can I utilize the UVA Wise Post Office?
Mail Services will be available daily, Monday through Friday, for faculty and staff of UVA Wise. Anyone needing to pick up mail or a package can do so between the hours of 11 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. There will be no mail delivery across campus. You can access the Slemp Student Center at the main entrance or the entrance on the 4th floor.  All couriers have been notified to deliver directly to the Post Office during this time.
