Contractor:
Estes Brothers Construction, Inc.

Project Cost:
$2.1 million

The spillways of two earthen dams located adjacent to the David J. Prior Convocation Center are being replaced to meet Department of Conservation and Recreation (DCR) Dam Safety regulations for storage and storm water runoff. The spillway design for both dams is a 16-foot-wide, single cycle reinforced concrete labyrinth weir spillway. In addition, a sharp crested weir, 11 feet long for one dam and 12 ½ feet long for the other dam, will be incorporated into the design to control normal pool and discharge inflows up to, and including, the 100-year 24-hour storm event, so that the total spillway widths will be 27 feet and 28 ½ feet respectively. Flows discharging over the weirs will be conveyed into downstream stilling basins via a reinforced concrete chute, with a 12-inch-diameter low level gate to allow for reservoir drawdown.
