UVa-Wise to observe Tornado Preparedness Day with emergency alert test March 18

Virginia Governor Tim Kaine has proclaimed March 18, 2008, as Tornado Preparedness Day. In conjunction with the University of Virginia, UVa-Wise will test its emergency alert system at 9:45 a.m. on Tuesday, March 18, 2008.

You may have received or will receive e-mails from the University of Virginia of their tests that will be conducted in Charlottesville. You will receive these e-mails from the University as part of their test of the emergency e-mail notification. UVa-Wise will activate the emergency siren and campus alert system at 9:45 a.m. At this time, faculty, staff and students are reminded that during the event of an actual tornado, it is important to remember the following:

  • Brief discussion on staying inside buildings until notification of evacuation has been made
  • Stay away from all windows
  • If outside, seek shelter to avoid flying debris
  • Remain in safe location until otherwise notified by alert system
  • Do not use elevators
  • Do not use any open flames

If you have any questions, please contact Campus Police at 276-328-COPS.

Campus Wind Advisory - Feb. 17, 2008

Update: Feb. 19, 2008

The Dining Hall will resume normal operations in Cantrell Hall beginning with lunch today. Thank you for your patience and understanding during the interim arrangements.

Update: Feb. 18, 2008

Due to heavy rain and subsequent leaking, dining has been moved from the Cantrell Hall cafeteria. Until further notice, meals will be served in Cantrell Hall's private dining room (Cantrell 206) and the Grille, as well as the Chapel of All Faiths.

Feb. 17, 2008

At approximately 1 p.m. today, a wind shear removed the outer tin on the roof of Cantrell Hall.

No one was injured. All metal removed by the shear landed in a vacant construction site.

Campus police have marked off areas around the first-floor perimeter of Cantrell Hall. Students, faculty, staff and visitors on campus are urged to not cross into these areas marked off by campus police, and to enter Cantrell Hall only via the second-floor entrance.

Because of today's strong winds, all those on campus are advised to remain alert at all times and stay inside when possible.

Meals will continue to be served in Cantrell Hall. Students may be asked to dine in the private dining room (Cantrell 206) or the old Papa Joe's dining area, depending on the condition of the cafeteria dining area.
