Writing and Citations

In graduate school. you will spend a lot of time writing. Depending on the program that you enter, you will likely be required to use APA formatting for your citations.

AI Policy

Policies regarding the use of AI in classes vary by department and class.  Please check in with your professor about their policies regarding the use of AI.  These policies should also be posted within course syllabi.  For instance, here is an example of an AI policy in a M.Ed. course, which allows the use as long as there is citation:

AI POLICY: Let’s make sure we are all on the same page when it comes to using AI in this class. AI is here and like the introduction of the calculator, some people believe dark days lay ahead because we will rely on AI to write papers, think, and creativity will be determined by a computer program. I see AI as being another tool that can help produce quality work. My thoughts… if you use any AI be sure to give credit and use the proper citations, and don’t you dare submit work that doesn’t represent your style, message, or key points. As a college professor, I can usually spot AI-generated work in seconds, your goal in using AI is to ensure that your voice is heard and the AI helps with structure, format, and sequencing. For students and scholars, AI can be a powerful tool that enhances their learning experience or research endeavors – but, if used improperly, it can also degrade the quality of a student’s education and undermine the rigor and impact of scholarly research. Much depends on the specific pedagogical or intellectual context within which AI tools are being used, and on how those tools either support or weaken the underlying goals of a given academic endeavor. Since these contexts vary widely, it is my policy to allow the use of AI with citation and the assurance that your voice, message, and points are shining through.
