Southwest Virginia Economic Forum Returns to UVA Wise with Governor Abigail D. Spanberger as Special Guest
Leaders, innovators and community members from across the region will gather on Thursday, May 21, 2026, for the annual Southwest Virginia Economic Forum at the University of Virginia’s College at Wise (UVA Wise). This year’s event will feature a special appearance by Governor Abigail D. Spanberger, who will share insights on strengthening Virginia’s economy and supporting communities across the Commonwealth.
Governor Spanberger, who grew up just outside of Richmond, has dedicated her career to public service. A graduate of the University of Virginia (UVA), she served with the U.S. Postal Inspection Service and later as a CIA officer before being elected to represent Virginia’s 7th Congressional District, where she won three consecutive terms. As Governor, Spanberger is focused on uniting Virginians, lowering costs for families, strengthening public education and keeping communities safe.
The Southwest Virginia Economic Forum serves as a cornerstone event for the region, bringing together business leaders, policymakers, educators and residents to think boldly, build connections and shape the future of Southwest Virginia and Central Appalachia.
“The Southwest Virginia Economic Forum reflects the very best of our region which includes innovation grounded in community, and progress driven by collaboration. At UVA Wise, we are proud to gather leaders and neighbors alike to engage in meaningful dialogue about our shared future. This year’s theme captures our deep commitment to place and our collective ambition to build a stronger, more resilient economy for Southwest Virginia and Central Appalachia,” says UVA Wise Chancellor Donna P. Henry.
This year’s theme, “Rooted & Rising,” highlights the region’s commitment to honoring its deep community foundations while advancing forward-looking economic growth. Through sessions focused on community and economic development, workforce and talent, tourism and more, the Forum allows meaningful dialogue and collaboration to help communities grow and thrive together.
