Sixth grade students from Lee County, Scott County and the City of Norton got a firsthand look at the possibilities available in science, technology, engineering, mathematics and health during STEM-H Day at the University of Virginia’s College at Wise (UVA Wise) on Monday.

Hosted by UVA Wise and sponsored by the Appalachian Power Foundation, STEM-H Day took place in the David J. Prior Convocation Center on campus. The interactive event was designed to spark students’ curiosity about STEM-H subjects while introducing them to the wide range of careers those fields can offer.

Throughout the day, students rotated through hands-on workshops led by UVA Wise faculty, staff and community partners. The activities are designed to take STEM-H concepts beyond the classroom and give students opportunities in engaging in real-world ways.

Activities included suturing bananas as an introduction to medical skills, robotics demonstrations and interactive exploration, and a hands-on examination of a real human brain.

“We love to give back to the community and watching the kids’ eyes light up when they realize they made something is amazing. STEM-H is important and these students could work for AEP one day. We want to help them realize their dreams,” says Jacob Holmes, External Affairs Manager for Appalachian Power.

The event is part of UVA Wise’s ongoing commitment to encouraging young people to explore STEM-H disciplines and helping students understand how the subjects they encounter in school can translate into meaningful careers.

By connecting students with hands-on experiences and professionals working in STEM-H fields, organizers hope to encourage students to remain engaged in science and mathematics as they move through middle and high school.

“I have a degree in physiology and understand the value of STEM-H early in the student’s life. I’m excited to be a part of inspiring the next generation to love this field of study as much as I have,” says UVA Wise Chancellor Donna P. Henry.

STEM-H Day also provides an opportunity for students to see themselves as future scientists, engineers, health care professionals, technology specialists and innovators.

“The overall takeaway that we really want them to have from the event is that any of the careers that they get to see during the day; they can become them. If they can see it, they can be it,” says Brooke Barnette, UVA Wise laboratory and chemical safety officer.

Through partnerships with area schools, AEP and community organizations, UVA Wise continues to create opportunities that introduce young learners to the possibilities available through STEM-H education.

For the sixth graders who attended Monday’s event, STEM-H Day offers more than a lesson in science or technology. It is an opportunity to ask questions, try something new and begin imagining what a future career in STEM-H might look like.
