Faculty Learning Communities

Faculty Learning Communities

This year all CEEI workshops are bundled into a series of thematically connected workshops or activities.  You can attend these workshops individually (they are listed on the calendar) or commit to attending all of the workshops in that series as part of a Faculty Learning Community (FLC).  Participating in a FLC provides an opportunity to have the deeper, more introspective, and more sustained engagement with a topic that a single-hour workshop cannot provide.  Small stipends are available for full participation in some FLCs  (limit of one stipend per person per semester). Contact Emily ead2y@uvawise.edu for more information or to sign up.

Find dates and times for individual workshop on the CEEI Calendar or contact Emily ead2y@uvawise.edu for information.

New Faculty Learning Community

All new faculty at UVA Wise participate in a three-semester mentoring program called the New Faculty Learning Community. This program, grounded in extensive academic research on successful professional mentoring, provides general orientations each semester and customized individual mentoring to new faculty.

Because tenure track faculty need three letters for pre-tenure, including one outside their discipline, they are mentored by three different mentors over the course of the program.  In their first semester, their mentor is someone outside their discipline who can help them develop a broader college-wide perspective on issues, expand their social and professional networks, and learn about collegiality and successful teaching in other disciplines. In their second and third semester, they are mentored by a discipline-specific mentor who will guide them better to navigate the unique disciplinary needs of their specific positions.  To encourage professional growth, faculty are asked to attend a CEEI workshop and to observe and reflect on each mentor's teaching. In addition, mentors unofficially observe new faculty in the classroom each semester so that their teaching can benefit from hands-on engagement with a mentor.  New faculty are also asked to attend a campus or community event outside their discipline each semester to develop a sense of belonging and connection.

This program is a ten-hour time commitment for new faculty over the course of each semester, but in exchange for this, all other service expectations will be waived in the first year.

Master Teacher Faculty Learning Community

Held monthly on the first MONDAY at 1pm and THURSDAY at 1:30 of the month in Smiddy 230
Faculty interested in learning more about teaching excellence and innovation are invited to drop in any time to join a group of individuals committed to teaching excellence and innovation to discuss teaching ideas and provide support in the Master Teacher Learning Community.   If you are teaching any UVA Wise class then you are warmly invited to join the Master Teacher Learning Community.  Not a lecture or a workshop, this is a friendly multi-disciplinary monthly coffee chat about what is working and what we want to improve.  Anyone teaching a UVA Wise class is welcome and a small stipend will be provided to those who attend three meetings this semester!
